CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
Yesterday's meeting of the Council of the Chamber of Commerce—the first held by the new council—extended from 3.30 p.m. to 6.15 p.m. Those present were:— Messrs. A. E. Mabin (chairman), E. W. Hunt, Leigh Hunt, Jas. Macintosh, Manton, Thos. Ballinger, Jns. M'Lellan, E. G. Pilcher, and T. C. Dawson. Employers' Federation. ' Mr. E. G. Pilcher was appointed the Chamber's representative on tho New Zealand Employers' Federation. The Press. Mr. C-. W. Jones (who was absent) had given notice that he would move:—"That tho press bo admitted to regular council meetings." The meeting discussed tho matter for about half an hour, whilst pi'ossnKMi waited outside. It was oventualjy decided, as Mr. Jones was absent, to postpono consideration of the motion for a month. Railway Matters. Mr. A. Leigh Hunt moved:—That a deputation'consisting of the whole council wait upon the Minister for Railways to urge tho following:—(1) Tho early establishment of a Central Railway Station for Wellington; (2) the establishment of an auxiliary goods shed at Te Aro railway station; (3) tho instituting of a system of through booking of goods by land and sea through tho Railway Department as suggested by tho New Zealand Farmers' Union mid approved of by 22 Chambers of Cominerco throughout New Zealand. Mr. Hunt stated that. Wellington hnd been long neglected in the matter of the erection of a central railway station, and urged that Wellington, as tho Empire City and terminus of tho Main Trunk line, should have a station nt least as good as thoso of Auckland or Dunedin. He also pointed out how tho Te Aro station, capitally situated for goods purposes, was being neglected, and also advocated the through land and sea booking brought into prominence by tho New Zealand Farmers Union. Mr. Pilcher moved as an amendment that the words, "and in the closing of the Te Aro railway station," be added to Clause 1 of the motion. This was agreed to. With this amendment the motion was carried. Appointing an Official Orgnn. Mr. T. C. Dawson moved:—"That tho oonncil consider tho question of appointing an official organ to record tho proceedings of tho Chamber." This was passed, and tho following comniHtce was set up look im-thev into tho matter:—The chairman. Messrs. T. C. Dawson, E. G. Pilcher, and E. AY. Hunt.
