Forbes, the Keueral manager of the Koyal Mail .Steam Packet Company, has just returned from a trip to tho Panama Canal on behalf of his company, whose interest:? aru now largely bound up with South America. Mr. Forbes considers that tho work on the canal lias beeu carried out by the United .States Government in a mugiiiiicoui. manner, which will be epoch-making, and he expresses the Jiopu that the dues will be on a reasonable «ral'c-f>ay, Idol, per ton. 11c considers that the record made io the establishment of health and sanitation at Panama is something to be proud of. There are three places on the canal where locks are beini? constructed—the first ,from Colon beui£ the Gatun Locks, seven mile* from the Atlantic side, tho locks being IOCOft. long and 110 ft. wide. It is estimatuh that vessels will be lifted 2ft. per minute, and the speed through the locks will average about two mile-o an hour. Vessel* will be able to go the whole length of the canal, which is about 50a miles, in not uiore than teu hours. INDPvAPnitA, FOR LONDON. The situation in Lyttelton this week in regard to the working of ships has been little short of farcicai (states the "Press" of April 13). Every vessel that has had cargo to land has fell, the pinch, and expensive delay has been the common lot. Rig oversea liners, intercolonial passenger boats, and the humble colliers and timber .•learners have suffered in common. As an instance of the intolerable delays caused, the case of si small timber-laden steamer may be cited. Under ordinary conditions this vessel can discharge h'jr cargo in le-s ihan two working days. This week she started unloading on Tuesday morning, and she only finished yesterday morning, ami her departure has had to be postponed until to-day. Tho railway oillcial's in Lyttelton do all in their power to • keep the work of discharging going, but it is in Ghristehnreh that some drasti? change in the methods of trucks is want* ed. Only two or three days ago a- "rake" of twenty or more large 25-tou wagons that had been fitted utj for carrying passengers wer6 standing idle on a siding in Christchurch.
The shortage of rolling stock is also being felt at Wellington at the -present time, many vessels having been delayed in consequence.

The Hakanoa left. Newcastle for Dunedin, via- the Bluff, on Friday last. On arrival at Hob.art from .Sydney, tho barque Aldebaran, which was recently pur*' chased by the Union Company, wiU be con\erted into coal hulk. For many years past the Aldcbaran has been engaged in the. intercolonial coal and timber trade, making trips between Newcastle, Auckland, Kaipara, Thames, and Sydney. At 2.35 p.m. on Saturday the Scales chartered ?ienmer Cian Ogilvy left Port Chalmers for Newcastle. The vessel, which was loading in New Zealand for London, was chartered by the Union Company, and brought a rargo of coal from Newcastle 1o the southern port last week. She loads at Newcastle for Auckland. Now taking in Home cargo at Lyttelton the New Zealand Shipping Company's new steamer Hurnnni will leave for Napier about Wednesday.
