ART GALLERY FUND
DONATION BY BANK OF NEW ZEALAND. As a result of a little less than one week's canvass (the Easter holidays havo intervened since the City Council decided to give a grant ol 4:1000 it' citizens subscribed .£50011), tiie fund for the purchase of pictures for tho National Art Gallery now stands at tCJ'i'!. In addition to this two pictures aro to be presented—one by Messrs. Levin and Co. and one by Mr. Vivian Iliddiford, of the Hutt. .Although no sum is mentioned now, the value of tho pictures will go to Mvel,' the minimum amount of JijflOO which has to be raised. A notable addition to the fund is that of one hundred guineas by the Bank of New Zealand, which, in common with the other banking institutions, was approached to support the movement. The matter was considered by the directors of tho bank at their meeting on Friday, and the board dccided to donate the sum mentioned. . Mr. A. E. Mabin, chairman of tho Chamber of Commerce, has convened a meeting of the council for this afternoon, when he will move: "That this chamber accords its 'hearty support to tho movement in favour of establishing a fund for tlvo purposo of. purchasing pictures for the proposed National Art Gallery ia Wellington."
