Maunganui, which failed last evening. J'rinr to leaving, the former staled that both Gnome and Canute would run in the North Island Challenge Slakes, which race is to be decided at Trenthani on Wednesday next. Byron was under offer to two distinct owners in Wellington yesterday, but no business resulted. Nominations for tho Autumn meeting of tho Marlborough Racing Club, to be held oil May 1 aml L', close with, the secretary, Mr. 1,. Griffiths, Blenheim, to-night. I.os Angeles and liandiera, both of whom are twined by li. O'JJomicll, and will bo ridden by W. Young, are tho respective favourites for tho Thomson and Telegraph Handicaps at (lie forthcoming Wellington meeting. The pair mentioned will arrive in Wellington to-morrow morning, when Sir. Georgo Clifford's team will also land. Mr. JI. Whitney is sending Naumai to tho Timani meeting oil April 24 and 25. S. lieid is remaining in tho South Island and will ride the Conqueror gelding. A. Oliver lias been engaged to ride Turna ill the Welter on the first day of the Trenthani meeting. It is understood that the latest breakdown of Abcrbrotliock is of a permanent nature; and it is not likely that tho l'apaknra horse will bo persevered with further. Tho Australian Jockev Club's Autumn meeting will conclude at Randwick today. Tho principal event is the A.J.C. l'lato, three miles, of 1500 sovs., but, unless tho distance is run in less than sinin. 45sec., the prize money is reduced by one-half. The withdrawal of Trafalgar from tile l'lnco Handicap evidently means that tho champion son of Wallace is to bo reserved for tho longer race, and it will be interesting to see if he can put up record figures in his last appearanco on the turf. At pleniington, when he won the Champion Stakes (threo miles) ho was only a second and a fraction outside tile existing record of smin. 23} sec., held by Wallace and Quiver, who dead-heated in 18'JG. Had he been pushed at. all, there is little doubt that he would have put up fresh figures, but, as it was, neither Prizefighter nor Indiscreet, who opposed him, was ever near enough to extend him over tho final 14 furlongs. Nominations for the Wanganui Jockey Club's Winter meeting close on Friday next. G. Price arrived from Eiccarton yesterday with five horses, sending three on . to Awapuui and two. to Trenthani. Sir Geo. Clifford had four horses entered for the Thompson Handicap, namely Counterfeit, Masterpiece, Heatherbrae, and Countermine. When the acceptances wero announced last night it was seen that all four had dropped out of the mile race. Counterfeit and Masterpiece still remain in the St. I.eger, which is to be run on tho second day of the meeti ing. ' Bronze is another notable defection from / the Thompson Handicap field, but ' Mr. Higliden has a representative ill tlio race in the shape of Boanerges. , Although the Steeplechase and the Waiwetu Handicap, on the first day of the Trentham meeting, have not filled as well as might have been cxpected, tho acceptances taken all round are highly satisfactory, and with seventeen in the Thompson Handicap and fourteen in tho Railway Handicap, both events should provide good contests. The presenco of Los Angeles in the and Equitas in tho latter will lend additional , interest, fixtures. April 17 and 20-Wellington R.C. Autumn. April 21 and 25—ManawatuR.C. Autumn. !, May 1 and 2-Mnrlborough R.C. Autumn, s. May 1 and 2-Hawko's Bay J.C. Autumn. 5 > ,
