LAWN TENNIS.
ON THE EASTER RENCONTRES,
[Bt '■Tootfaolt.'T Deus ex Machina Came. In the absence of an Easter tournament in Wellington a few enterprising plavers put their heads together, and decided to hold a Yankee tournament at Day's Bay on Easter Monday. Unfortunately, however, the weather proved so unfavourable that it was found impracticable to play at tho bay, but deus ex machina arrived in the shapo of tho Brougham Hill Club, who loaned two of their, courts. A combined handicap tournament was rattled olf in tho afternoon in defiance of somewhat adverse conditions. Miss It. Pearson and L. Butcher proved winners. They played consistently all through, and soared to a very commendable win in tho final, beating Mrs. Sampson and J. A. B. Ilowe. On Brougham Hill Courts. P. Laishlev is now the holder of Brougham Hill's men's championship singles. In defeating Hawkins in tho final ho gave a masterly display, playing with more of his old dash than wo have seen for some 1 time. Miss Davis has been rewarded in her steady endeavour to annex the ladies' singles championship. For three years sho has been runner-up, but this time she successfully carried off the honours of the day bv defeating Miss Morgan, the 6 resent holder, in tho final, 9—5. Miss avis put up an excellent game, driving well to her opponent's backhand, and placing with accuracy and judgment. It was a well-deserved victory. Miss Powdrell in tho Arena. It is pleasant to learn that Miss Powdrell is once more in the arena. One gathers that she has lost none of her former dash, as, after subborn rencontre, she defeated Miss Gray in tho tournament at Auckland, the event being tho North Island Inter-Association Championship, G—2, 4—C, G —l. In the ultimate Auckland defeated Taranaki by 18 sets to 17. Each team secured eight matches, and therefore the contest had to be decided by tho number of sets won. As there was only the narrow margin of ono set in Auckland's favour, tho result goes to show how all important it is in n match of this description for each player to fight for every point of the game. " Sydney and Elsewhere, In the forty-ninth inter-state match between New South Wales and Victoria, the former team won by 137 games to S2 —a very decisive victory. If N'ew South Wales wins in Melbourne, the Result will be level at 25-alI in the fiftieth contcst— an interesting state of affairs. At the Wniiganui tennis championships Miss Simpson won the ladies' championship singles. Mrs. Hesse and Miss Cave carried oft' the doubles and the combined event. The men's handicap singles went to Gregg, tho men's handicap doubles to Hedditch. and Crawshaw.
Tho ladies' bjuidicap doubles were won by Mesdames Gordon and Jones.
