VICTORIA LEAGUE.
ANNUAL MEETING. — * The annual meeting, of the Wellington branch of the Victoria League was hehl in the Sydney Street Schoolroom last evening, J)r. A. K. N'ewnian prositlinsMiss Coates, Mesdames J.. F. J.uke and Corliss, aild ])r, Martin, members of (ho council, occupied scats on the.'platform. The annual report - stated that during the year the work of the league had been considerably extended, and cognisaiieo had been taken of the Coronation, nnd the visit of the Sheffield Choir to Wellington. The Settlers' Welcome Committee in London were now sending them a large number of introductions, and by every liner there were aided passengers whom they were pleased to welcome. Perhaps it wasnot sufficiently known that advice and help are given to those who go to England to study art, music, and general teaching. Many had found this most useful when they arrive as strangers in a strange land. The correspondence branch had done good work,'and many children had found it pleasant and profitable to exchange letters "with others in different parts of the Empire. In connection with the junior branch the executive had decided to order fifty copies monthly of the Victoria I.eagUo Xotcs, and tlieso were distributed among the junior associates and tlio "Our Girls" ■ Branch. The competitions announced in connection with the Coronation had brought seven prizes in all to Wellington girls—two for cartoons, and five for poems. A special prizo was awarded to a small girl whose poem was set to music, composed by herself. Miss Isabel Field's first prize cartoon had been published as au inset to the Notes, and arrangements were being mado to publish another by Mis« Gladys Davis, The league was certainly doing valuable work in discovering and encouraging the talents of, the younger people. Thanks were expressed In Miss Coates, Mrs. J. F. Luke, and Mrs. Grady for (he good work done, and assistance given to the league in a variety of ways. A lengthy report of the newly-rotmed girls' branch was dUo read. The reports and balance-sheet were pn=sed. ])r. Newman, in a brief allures', outlined the objoet'3 of the leftgue. At Home it had grown. so rapidly that it now had 10,5(10 members, tt existed to bring about closer social ami friendly relations between the people of Great. Britain and the Dominion*. In this ner the movement to build ut> a great and (omiinrt Empire would be greatly strengthened. Good work was being done in the schools by the distribution of Imperial literature. Dr. Martin also spoVe on the object* of the. league. On his motion, the executive wa« accorded n hearty volfl of thanks. A vole of thanks was accorded to Mr. D. M'Kny for auditing the balmee-Oieet. (which showed a credit balance of X3S 15s. 14).
During the evening songs were con' tributcd by Mr. Allright, Misses M. Shirtcliffc, Kathleen Anderson, Gwen Shepherd, and Mavis Hall, and _ piano sdloi by Miss. Corliss and Miss Kathleen Anderson. The following officers • were elected for tho ensuing year:—President, MissC'oates; vicc-prcsidcnts, Mesdames Godlcy, Grace, Grady, Kankine-Browii, Miss Holmes, and J)r. Martin; council, Misses C'oates, Harding, Mesdames Corliss, Corrigan, Chalficid, Larnacli, Rankine-Brown, Pitched, Harris, I.ul;e, I'latls-Mills, Stott, Algar Williams, Sir Joseph Ward, Drs. Martin, Izard, Messrs. Morison, Powlea, Atkins, C. R. Smith, and R. Turnbull.
