OBITUARY.
ME. FEED. J. POWNALL,
It will como as a shock to many to learn of the death of Mr. Fred. J. Pownall, which took place at a private hospital in Wellington last night. Mr. Pownall, who was the Wellington agent for the Yorkshire Insurance Co. and the Canterbury Farmers' Insurance Company, was quite well up to a day or two ago, wheh he contracted blood-poisoning in the head in the simplest manner, possibly through a scratch. The deceased, who was forty-five years of age, was the second son of tho late Mr. C. J. Pownall, and'of MrSl'Pownall/of'K'araka Bay. His brothers are Messrs. William, Arthur, rind Robert Pownall, and his''sisters Jlesdames C. E. Richardson and Oscar Kember, of Wellington. Mr."! Pownall was the first person to take up a residential section of land at Karaka Bay. Having often visited the 'place as a member of the Star Boating Club, he contracted an affection for it, and when the opportunity served purchased tho first section that was sold in that district, and resided there with his mother until the end.. In tho late '80's and early '90's, Mr. Pownall was a notably fine athlete. He was one of the most prominent members of the Wellington Football Club, and playeil representative football for Wellington from 1887 to 1891. .Hb was also a member of the Star Club's senior fours, and won several trophies with tlie oar. A 9 a member of the Wellington Amateur Athletic Club he was a very good quarter and half-mile Tunner, and a meeting was not regarded as complete if he did not compete. * He was very popular with all who kn9w him, and was above all a keen lover of naturo and an nctive advocato of life in the open air. The deceased was unmarried.
