KARORI COUNCIL.
THE NEW TICKET SYSTEM,
A meeting of the Karori Borough Council was heiu last evening, tne .Mayor (.Ur. C. Calhic) presiding. There were also present Councillors Stamten, Horn, iiurji, Ninuno, liraunock, i-rosi, ami Anderson.
Wiln regard to the new system of issuing tickets on the Karori line, the Tramways Coinmittoi) recommended tnat il:e ola system lie reverted to. The present system is that no Karori tickeU are issued until Karori-bo'.ind cars have passed tne Botanical Gardens. It was pointed out by several councillors that numbers of people alight from the cars alter leaving ihe Gardens without paying any fare, and also (hat, on full cars,' the conductors find difficulty in collecting all the fares bcloro tne cars have reached the first loop.
One councillor mentioned that the trouble lay chiefly in tho fact that somo conductors were extremely slow in giving change.
The Mayor staJed that it was regrettable that so many people appeared to be dishonest. However, it only required a few prosecutions to warn such members of the public of their duty.
Councillor Horn supported Councillor Burns's suggestion, that everybody should be asked lo show their tickets after the cars had left the Gardens.
The recommendation was adopted. On the recommendation of the Public Works Committee, it was resolved that the remainder of the Evelyn Estate streets be taken over, provided that the strip r, f land on the south boundary between "Espin Crescent and the embankment over the Kaiwan-a si ream be dedicated io the council for a drainage reserve; that the requirements of the Borough Engineer now being carried out be completed to his satisfaction; that the owner pay over lo (he council tho sum of .t'7-1 13s. sd. to complete further work, as laid down Mi a schedule previously supplied, and that fhe fence erected across Watson Street be removed before the streets arc taken over.
The Town Clerk stated that on March 31 outstanding rales amounted (o JE2-1S
(is. 3d.—.£191 19s. Id. from Karori, and £X 7s. 2d. from Northland. The clerk was instructed to sue for these.
The Tramways Committee recommended that the question of reducing the service on Hie trams stand over until the Tramway Board had forwarded their scheme for an improved service to tho Gardens.—Carried.
A detailed report of the works carried out during the past twelve months was submitted by the Borough Engineer. Although some of the allocations out of the general accounts were exceeded tho aggregate of expenditure on public works will be topped by a small surplus of about .£7O, when credited with receipts.
