At the conference of the Church of England .Men's Society a resolution urging upon members to use (heir influence, to do away with the evils of intompern/.ice was unanimously carried. The mover (Mr. I'allot, of Napier) also embodied, a provision urging an amendment of the licensing, law in the direction of securing the opening of bars only between tho hours of ',) a.m. and (! p.m., and providing, that bars should be expcsed to public view. The conference decided to icier tho proposed amendments for the consideration of all branches and to report at the next conference,
"The Dangers of Camp Life" was another subject of discussion. A resolution was carried thai an endeavour should b« made to arrange for church services in all the military camps in New Zealand,
A motion suggesting appointment of a Dominion executive, with the Primate as President, was agreed to without discussion.
The committee, appoiiited on the previous day to consider the advisableness of engaging a travcllin- organising secretary imported that the expense, which was estimated at .£3OO per annum, would be too heavy ntthe present time. A suggestion was offered that the various diocesan, authorities should be asked to visit thfi binnches and that a central fund should l>c established to meet such expenses as would lie- entailed. Tho report was adopted,
It was resolved that next year's conference be hold in Dnnedin.
A united churchman's gathering wai hold this evening in the Town Hall. A procession headed by _30 banner bearers marched to the hall singing hymns. Tho chair was taken by Bishop Crossley, Bishop .lulius also being present. ■ Bishop Crossley said he would regard that, significant gathering of churchmen ns something of a failure if it did not produce some fresh humility, some larger zeal, and greater courage. Bishop Julius said they hoard sometimes a great deal about the church and, sometimes they failed to realise that the church was not an end but a means to nu end, and the end was the manifestnJinn of the Church's Lord and Master, That was what churchmen had to aim at.
