MASTERTON NOTES.
(By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Masterton, April !). Heavy rain fell in the district last night, nearly an inch, being recorded. Tlie lull in (lie ranges must have been still moro heavy, for the IVaingawa. and Waiohine rivers were in high, flood. Both overflowed their banks, and inundated a largo area of the low-lying country. A motor-car returning to Masterton last evening from the Tauherinikau races collided with a lady cyclist. The lady was thrown heavily, and sustained severe bruises and a shaking. The 'Waini-apa Presbytery met in Jlasterton to-day, whe.l it was decided, among other business, to make a call for the I.ansdowno charge. A site for a church has been acquired, and the stipend of the minister has been guaranteed. A couple of weddings wore celebrated here yesterday.- Mr. F. Kilinistcr was married to Miss M'Barron, daughter of Mr. P. M'Barron, and Mr. C. Hopkins to Miss Olliver, daughter of Mr. G. Olliver. A pairs tournament was played here during the Easter holidays in connection with the Masterton Bowling Club. The finals will probably be decided on Saturday. Mr. R. }\. Robson, who has been appointed manager of the Timnru "Post,' : leaves here to-morrow for Timaru. Prior to his departure he is to be presented with a framed photograph of tlio officials of the Wairnrana Caledonian Society, of which he has been a director.
Very little interest is being taken here in the Mayoral contest. So far, Councillor T. Hoar is the only person announced as likely to contest the position with tho sitting Mayor.
