The Hon. A. M. Myejs, tho Hon. G. Lauronson, the Hon. W. I). S. Macdonaid, and the Hon. Te Kanpriln'ron returned to town yesterday. The Hon. H. G. Ell is also in Wellington. The Prime Minister and the Hon. G. W. Russell will be nt Manaia and Eltham to-day. The Hon. J. C'olvin is at Greyinonth. and. the Hon. T. Buxton at Teimika. The Hon. J. A. Hanan will arrive in town this morning from tho south. Mr. Justice' Sim reached Wellington from Palnierston North last evening. Mr. C. P. Lindeßroen, of Hastings, has been appointed Official Organiser for the Keform party. Mr. Lindogreen, accompanied Mr. Masscy on his trip to Christchurch. Several changes have taken place lately in the homo mission stations of the Presbyterian Church around Wellington. At last night's meeting of the Presbytery, tho Rev. W. Shirer, Moderator, of Island Bay, reported that this district was nowseparated from St. James's, and that Mr. Harvey, the agent in charge, had commenced liis work last Sunday. Mr. Geo. Gibb, ivlio has done excellent work at Rona Bay during the summer, has returned to ICnox i College, Dunedin, and Rev. Mr. Finlayson will resume work nt the bay during tho winter. Mr. C. Tocker has completed a successful term of service at Wadestown, and goes to Dunedin to continue his course of study. The Rev. Mr. Harris will be in charge of this district. Before leaving for Auckland,, whither he lios been transferred, Mr. T. P. Walshe was presented by his fellow officers of the Land Transfer Oflice, Wellington, with a travelling rug. Tho Labour Party Conference yesterday, on tho motion of Mr. D. M'Laren, expressed its -sincere regret at the death of Mr. D.P. Fisher, of Auckland, mid sympathy with his relatives. Supporting the moljom Mr. R. Slater said that the lato Mr! Fisher was .secretary of the first Trades Councils Conference held in Mew Zealand twenty-ono years ago. Mr. Slater was chairman of the same conference.
Mr. G. A. Cormack, Vf the Electoral Department, has been appointed clerk in chargo and deputy-chief electoral officer for the Dominion, vice Mr. 1". Brans, transferred to the position of Registrar of Births, Deaths, and Marriages at Christchurch.
It is reported that Dr. Bradshaw has resigned the conductorship of tho Christchurch Musical Union.
According to a letter received in Sydney, Dick Arnst severely strained the muscles of one of his legs on board the R.M.S. Otway, when that vessel was between Adelaido and Fremantle. The champion had to abandon his training operates. Now.s has since been received that Arnst played in a cricket match at Ceylon, so his injuries must have been slight.
Mr. Philip Newbury has been engaged by tho Royal Wellington Choral Society to sing tho tenor role in Mascagni's dramatic opera, "Cavalleria Rusticana," to be sung in concert form at the Town Hall noit month.
Mr. Harry Listor, lato of West's Pictures, and the Brescians, is in town making arrangements for tho musical comedy season of Miss Marie Bailies, in "Miss Lancashire, Limited," commencing at tho Opera House on Monday, April 22.
There passed away at tho Veterans' Home, Auckland, on Sunday, another link with the past in the person of Veteran Isaac Glceil, late of the 57th Regiment. Deceased, who was SO years of age. served with the 57tli from 1851 to 16G3. He saw service in the Crimea, and received tho Turkish War- medal and (he Sebastopol medal with bars for Sevastopol, Internum, and Balaclava.. Ho also fought in Taranaki during the Maori War, and received a'Maori War medal.
Mr. John Cable, who died at Perth, Western Australia, on Good Friday, was born near Dundee and arrived at Port Chalmers in the ship Parra in 186 G. He had the distinction of being the first engineer apprentice to learn the trade in Dunedin. After completing his apprenticeship Mr. Cable joined the steamer Maori, serving on that vessel under both Captains Malcolm and Bernech, and ultimately becoming chief engineer. He was the first junior engineer in the province of Otago to gain a certificate. Ho left the Maori and joined tho late Mr. ,T. Morgan in founding tho business so well known as that of Morgan and Cable. Mr. Cablo retired from the business at Port Chalmers now known as the Maori Ironworks, and went to Perth, Western Australia, where he again entered business. He leaves a widow, three sons, and four daughters. The death of Mr. A. C. Grant, stationmaster at Hokitika, occurred last evening. Deceased, who was operated upon on Saturday for appendicitis, had been stationed at Hokitika for about four years. Ho was about 36 years of age.— Press Association. Mr. George Rignold, tho veteran actor, of Sydney, is « visitor to Auckland. Ho Intends to visit Rotorua. Mr. Claude Wntson, one of the engineers of tho Auckland Electric Tramway Company, has been appointed assistant engineer to tho Waitemata County Council. Mr .and Mrs. F. M. B. Fisher leave for Hawke's Bay this morning.
