Vare started by scoring onefclf the second ball from Coates, and each man scored singles until 9 was reached, when Vare was run out from a smart return by Douglas. Bailey joined Gonrlav, and 'some fine batting was witnessed, b: ; th men hitting freely all round the wicket. When the score had reached 08 Hopkinson took the ball from Baker at the north end, and Bailey had a lite when he had reached 29. Douglas in t he deep field, misjudging the ball. "M'Gill was next man in, but after making 0 he was nicely taken by Courtayne, off Stevenson. AVitli the score at 135, Baker relieved Hopkinson, and in his second over clean bowled AVnrne. Harris then joined Gourlay, and the fieldsmen once more had a rather merry time, and after ail hour and 55 minutes' play 150 appeared. Then Gourlay, with a drive to the boundary, passed Bailey's score, and at 158 Coates again went on. Off his third ball Harris was missed at fine-leg, Siblev just failing to hold the ball. Pell, tho Auckland wicketkeeper, who was doing good work behind, then lost a chance of stumping Gourlay, the Oriental representative having reached 81. Douglas now took the ball at the north end, vice Baker, the total being 18(i, and after further plav, Harris, with a late cut, brought up.200 after two hours and 25 minutes' plav. Sibley was then tried with the ball in place of Coates. After being at the wickets for two hours and 35 minutes, Gourlay reached his 100, but when he had added 4 more to his scorc he was beautifully taken in tho deep-field by Horsiwol, off Douglas. Thompson, the next man, only reached the wickets to set! Harris fall to a fine catch by Brown, off Douglas. Sullivan followed, and, when 9 runs had been added, Thompson was clean bowled by Hopkinson, who had replaced Sibley.
