A PROPOSAL AND ITS SEQUEL.
Mr. Frank Cocltrell, a timber merchant of Chicago, refused an offer of marriage made to him by Mrs. Edna Robinson, a wealthy woman of Portland (Oregon), who was recently divorced. It was at an aftertheatro supper party that Mrs. Robinson, recalling tho inanv years of friendship between herself and her host, suggested that a marriage based on such a foundation wag bound to bo successful and happy. Mr. Cockrell politely and as tactfully as possible rejected tho proposal. Subsequently Mrs. Robinson called him up On the telephone and informed him that she loved him deeply, and could not bear to live without him. He replied that he valued her friendship and wished to maintain it, but he did not cherish tho feelings of a husband to.vards her. "Then listen, Frank," came the woman's reply (according to tho "Daily Mail"). The next moment the report of a revolver shot crashed along the wire. When Mr. Cock,rell reached Mrs. Robinson's hotel lie found her with a bullet wound in the region of her heart. "I meant to kill myself outright," sho whispered, "but, you seo, I havo made a mess of it." The doctors declare that, though Mrs. Robinson's condition is grave, there is a faint possibility that sho will live.
