SCOTTISH SPORTS.
(By Tclesraph—Special Correspondent.) Palmcrston, April 8. The Manawatu Caledonian, Society had a record attendance at its annual gathering to-day. Since' its inception the society has held its gatherings on the Sports Ground, but, this year, tho ipauagement tried the experiment ol : holding the sports on • a ground whicu is situated closo to tho centre of population, and the result proved very gratifying. Tlio chief interest centred on the wrestling match for tho championship of New Zealand, between Alex. Bain and the Maori Moana Paratcno. In the Cumberland stylo Moana threw Bain with a buttock after a short tussle. Tho catch-as-catch-can bout was very "willing," and, after about ten minutes of strenuous wrestling, in which both men showed great cleverness, Bain secured tho verdict with a leg and neck hold. Tho real event of the contest was tho GraecoRomau style. This occupied seventeen minutes of very desperato and exciting wrestling before the Maori defeated Bain. Moana was in splendid condition, and had rather tho best of the weight. Following are tho results:— 150 yds. Maiden Race.—Wera, 1; Griffin, Putting tho Shot.—Dalton, 38ft. lOin.
