ATHLETIC SPORTS.

FOOTBALL. INVADERS FROM AUCKLAND MEET ATHLETIC. FIVE POINTS WIN TOR. LOCALS. A match was played on Saturday between the Athletic team, Wellington's last year's premiers, and the City first fifteen from Auckland, who won tho championship in the northern city last season. Athletic Park, on which the ganio was played, was liko cement, and there was a blazing sun overhead—no'conditions for a winter game. Athletic . kicked off against the sun, and nothing sensational happened for a quarter of nn hour or bo. Probably the honours were with City (Pied and Black), and the City men were tho first to show anything approaching brilliancy. The ball came out of an impossible bunch from Thomas to Ma<*ee. Alagee beat three prospective tacklnrs with very little spaco to make play with, fv P n , rcln y- w,l ° enmo next in order, took the ball and did likewise. Tho latter spoiled a splendidly-begun attack by giving a bad pass to Power, who had to take risks i to save a counter-attack. The general summary of the game up to this time was that the Kods did all the' lending, and that tho Blues' defence was good enough to keep them out of striking distance. Once or twice in ■ the spell the Athletic backs showed a flash of brightness, and handled tho ball in more or less

competent fashion, but half-time was called with City attacking again, and without a score: On resuming the Blues kept up a busy attack for five minutes, and were rewarded for their pains. Evensou mado a good nin, and gave the play away by kicking. The ball was returned well by Barclay to Gosling at wing three-quarters, and' he Kicked well under goal. The ball was caught by a City back, but he delayed incalling for a mark, and Roberts dashed up, snatched' the ball from him, and grounded it over the line. Roberts himself added the extra points—Athletic, 5 points; City, nil. Once again the Blues' second line showed their, quality in a very fine passing rush, but Gosling was janibed on the line in the end, and he had to be tackled with tho ball. The throw-in should have let Eapson score a try unopposed, but he knocked-on. The referee did not blow at the moment, and there was. no serum until two seconds later, when Sim Wilson dropped a field goal. Tho goal was rightly

disallowed,- and a scrum was formed o'n the line, but no move than n free-kick to flip attacking side came of it. Roberts failed with an easy kick. Twice afterwards the Blues happened on to a strong attacking position, anil once more there was an easy chance for a goal kick, but nothing was made of the opportunities, and the game ended with the Wellington team winners by five points to nil.
