Austin Loder, a well-known resident, was found dead in his hnus.: this afternoon with a bullet wound in the forehead. A rifle was lying at his feel. Ho had not been .-ecu Sunday last', and apparently had been dead for live or. six days. Deceased recently returned from a trip to the Old Country, bringing with him a riuonlilv of mcrchandue to' open business. He purchased business premises, and (hen became very despondent over the transaction, fearing that he had given too much. All inquest will be held to-morrow. At itho inquest on Alex. Hay, who was killed at Mount Maunganui yesterday while well-sinking, a verdict of accidental death was returned. . ' TERRITORIAL CAMPS. Christchurch, April 6. The Ist Regiment went into camp for instruction at Templeton on Thursday night, 467 men attending. The left half of the 13th Regiment concludes a week's camp nt Rangiora to-day. The right half is camping at Grgymouth. Eighteen (?) per cent, of this regiment is under canvas. Groymouth, April G. The territorial camp is being largely attended. Yesterday sports wero conducted in the afternoon. The behaviour of the men has been excellent, and tho drill is giving good results. Tho camp breaks up to-morrow, FIRST TRAIN TO OTOKO. Gisborne, April C. Tho official opening of the. railway to Otoko, 31 miles from Gisborne, took place to-dav, the ceremony being performed by the Hon. Vv. D. S. MaeDonald, Minister for Public Works. An excursion train left town at 9.30, carrying the members of tho Chamber of Commerce and representative people. A ribbon was cut at Waikohu, the late railway terminus, and congratulatory speeches delivered on arrival at Otoko. SEARCHERS IN PSYCHICS. Christchurch, April 6. At the conference of the Spiritualist;,' Association, the election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr. \V. C. Nation (re-elected); vice-presidents, Messrs. W. M. M'Lean (rc-clecfed) ami F. A. Moody; secretary, Mrs. W. E. Mooro (re-elected); treasurer, Mr. T. M'Nicholl; other members of the board, Miss G. M'Lean and Mr. G. Astridge; auditor, Mr. Fryer. Delegates were present from Auckland, Levin, Waihi, Wellington, New Plymouth, and from (he lyccuins of Wellington and- Christchurch. There- were also representatives from Victoria and Queensland in attendance.

A STRENUOUS EASTER, Wostport, April G. Fine weather has prevailed for the Easter holidays. Yesterday the annual cricket match, Buller v. West Coast, was played on Victoria Square, and ended in a win for the West Coast by 23 rmis. Today several events in connection with tho West Coast Football Club's Easter tournament were got off. A ten-mile Marathon race was won bv Morris, of Greymouth, with Raliuruhi, of Wostport, second, and Herring, of Cape Foulwind. third. The bicycle road race resulted:— Gnldie (Newton Flat), 1; Newman (Fairdown), 2; Smith (Corbyvale). 3. A seven-a-side football tournament produced good contests, twenty teams b?in? engaged. Grey Stars won both tho iunior and senior events. A pipe band from South Canterbury supplied the music. ODDFELLOWS' CONFERENCE, Christchurch, April G. The deputies attending the biennial Oddfellows' Conference were accorded a civic welcome to-day by Councillor Cooper, tho Acting-Mayor.

Ilellringer said thut the Unitv was trying to do a work which'would bo in the best interests of tho country, rriendly societies were now meeting with some recognition, for there was now in operation n strong movement in the direction of better provision for the aged and distressed. The conference opens on Monday. The board of directors met this morning and prepared certain reports, and transacted other preliminary business. HEART FAILURE. Christchurch, April 7. Mrs. Jane Parsons, 38 years of age, a married woman, residing at Papanui, dropped dead to-day. Heart failure is supposed to have been the cause. "QUAKES" AT ROTORUA. Rotorua, April T. A series of earth tremors, varying in intensity, were experienced hero this morning. These tremors, numbering twenty, lasted from 3.15 to 3.15. Another tremor occurred at 7 o'clock.
FIRE AT CARTERTON. Carterton, April G. A' firo occurred in Pembroke Street at 1.30 a.m. on Friday in a house owned by V. Clarkson and occupied bv Cuthbor't W. Bridge. The building and contents were totally destroyed. The contents included .£27 in cash and notes. Mr. Bridge was by himself at tho time, his wife and family being in Wellington., Ho escaped in his night attire. The insurances are .£2OO on the house and .£IOO on tho furniture. FRACAS IN A HOTEL. Auckland, April 7. Thomas Henry Phillips, who had been arrested at Wellington, came before Mr. Catchpolo, J.P., at the I'olico Court on a charge that on Marcli 8 he assaulted William Montgomery so as to cause him actual bodily harm. The chargo is ona arising out of an affair in a city hotel, in which Mr. Montgomery was badly handled by a number of men, who afterwards left the place in a motor-car. Chief Detective Marsack asked for a remand till Iriday. Tho Bench decided to fix bail al two approved sureties of .£SO, or ono of .£IOO. RUN OVER BY 'BUS. _. Auckland, April 7. The death of the lad Holmes Dcnbv, who was run over by a 'bus at Devonport on; Wednesday and died as a result of his injuries, 'was the subject of a' coroner's inquiry. A verdict of accidental death was returned. LAWN TENNIS. Greymouth, April G. Tho West Coast tennis championships tournament was commenced this morning in beautiful weather. There aro record entries.
