THE BISHOP-ELECT OF NELSON.

MELBOURNE AS A TRAINING GROUND. Referring to the appointment of Canon Sadlier to the Anglican Bishopric of Nelson, the "Church of England Messenger" (Melbourne) states;—" Less than n year ngo Melbourne was giving a Bishop to tho Diocese of Auckland in tho person of Archdeacon Crossley. Since then Canon Long has beeomo Bishop of Bathurst, and now we are sending away two more of our best clergy—Canon Sadlier to ho Bishop of Nelson, and the Rev. H. F. Mercer to be Dsan of Perth, W.A. Partly because this diocese is a strenuous training ground, partly perhaps because its Archbishop is a traveller who makes it known, it certainly seems to be a dioefse to which other parts of Australasia look when a special appointment is to be made. It would lie a drain to any single diocese to loso in such succession its ablest men, but while these will be serving the Church of God in a larger sphcro wo must not grudge them. Rather must wo send them forth as representatives of that mtordiocosan spirit which is larger than tho diocesanism into which wo aro sometimes prone to sink, and which will make us at times welcome men in return who will bring with them fresh blood, frosli vision and fresh vigour. To the new Bishop of Nelson we offer a hearty God-speed. Wo do it with a more than impersonal sense in this paper because for some years Canon Sadlier has been one of the most active of our Editorial Board, and tho 'Messen-. ger' owes to him many and many a page of effective writing, as well as wise guidance in policy. We also venture to congrahilato the diocese of Nelson on their ihoice of a leader. A true man of God, an eloquent preacher, a proved leader of men. a good organiser, a scholar, and a teacher, and a genial companion, Canon Sadlier has done much good in this diocese, and we predict for the iipw Bishop a happy and helpful episcopate."
