NOTES AND COMMENTS.

[Bl GIENCOX.] The fields at Tauhor.inikau to-day are of good average size, aud good racing may bo expected. In the Trial Hack race th.o two Trentham candidates—Lainbton, who showed up woll at the "Wellington meeting in July, and Semaphore, another speedy one —aie likely to encounter strong opposition from Distinction, a member of Mr. W. K. Uidwill's Kototawai team. Elfish and Toney, who nro No. 1 nud 2 respectively in 'tho Hack Welter, both showed winning form at Opnki lust week. Tho principal event is the Easter Handicap, quo mile and a quarter, the weights for which have been Trained on a hish scale. Golden Loop (Bst. 131b.) and Sea Queen (Bst. nib.) are likely to bo the public fancies, but several Rood judges point to Nedra as well treated. 11 r. ValIniice's mare carried list. 71b. in the Ladies' Bracelet at Opaki, and finished close up fourth, and, with a drop of ssh, is likely to trouble the top weights over tho concluding stages of to-day's race. In the Nursery JTandieap, Peroneal (Ost. 311)., ]{. Hatch) and King's Favourite (Bst. Sib"., C. Price) will fight their Dannevirko bnttJe over njffiin- Tho remainiiify events wear a very open appearance. The Wairarapa l'i\cins Club has arranged for a sppciiil train to leave Wellington ibr ]'eatliwston al ».;)» a.m., iiiid For Iho return journey » s];eeii\l train will leave- Feathers!on at 5.57 p.m. On -Monday, there will be two special trains Iraivinff Wellington for Fpiiiliursfon—une i at U. 117 ajn. and one at 8.35 a.m. I At the Auckland inci'tiii? to-day B. Deeley is to ride Jlii-s M'insoiue, Princo KonJt," Kakama, l'riocv ii«rri\voo, mid Jack DelArai.

A horse, whose ohance is highly Msesacd in the Groat Autumn Handicap at Riocarton, is the locally-owned Odessa (7st. 21b.). Tho St. Ambrose horso has been doing his work in a most satisfactory manner of late, and, on his public form, must havo a groat chance. Ho is to bo ridden by C. Jimcrsoii, j-ho has won the raco on tho last two occasions.

As Ynlido has been allowed to drop out of his Easter Handicap engagement at liiccarton, it may be .taken'for granted that all is well with Byrnn, and, providing a suitable horseman can bo secured, tho bay gelding is likely to start favourite in the seven furlong raco on Monday.

In some quarters a doubt is expressed as to whether Idcnlism will bo nt homo over fences, as ho has lately b«cn racing on tho flat. The Birkcnhcnd gelding ha* been a warm favourite for tho Brighton Hurdles nt Ellcrslio since tho appearance of the weights, nnd it ia stated that he was schooled over fences tho wrong way round four times before leaving Itastinga. A. Julian will have tho mount to-day. The Fox ton horseman, C. Price, has an engagement to ride in each of the eight events on the card at Feilding on Monday. He, will be up on Galtee, Ineuru, Stevens, Matapouri, The Eover, Fashion Plate, Parktide, and Lady Jloutoa. In the Halcoinbo Welter, which is tho last event of tho day, Price could havo had tho rido on no fewer than ten horses. Our Featherston correspondent advises that Khamsin, Martlet, and Waimahora liave been scratched for all engagements at the Wairarapa Racing Club's Autumn meeting. Waipaku nnd Los Anfeles are tho only two candidates for the C.J.C. Groat Autumn Handicap that claim no engagement on tho iirst day at liiccarton. The Dunedin Cup winner Parable is engaged at the Hivqrton meeting on Monday, as is Queen's Prize, who won the Southland Cup last week. It is reported that the owner of Sombrero has claimed the stakes won by Benzowen in (ho Flying Handicap at Invercnrgill. The objection is stated to be based on technical grounds by the owner of tho Simmer—Toque gelding, who finished second in the raco referred to. Their brother metollicians will agree (says a Sydney paper) that luck was dead against Messrs. W. Watson and J. Conway, two Coonablo bookmakers, who went for a trip in their newly-purchased motorcar recently. They had covered only threo miles of tho journey when the ear caught lire. In a few minutes all that was left were the two back wheels. At n meeting of the New Zealand Trotting Association, hold on Wednesday liight, it was decided to remit the.remaining portion of the sentence imposed on I , '. Holmes, whoso license had been suspended tor three mouths. The effect of 'the association's action was to reduce the suspension from threo months to two. What at mo time looked like being a serious accident occurred on the Itivcrton ccurse on Wednesday morning (says the 'Southland Times"). It was decided to give l'uro Gold a turn over the schooling Hurdles, and the mount was taken by \\. Jnryis, tho ancient iioyal .Shell, with A. M'Keiizie in tho saddle, acting us schoolmaster. Tho Dunedin mare got over the first fenco carefully and promisingly, but then took it into her head to increase the pace. She galloped very fast at the next jump and rai round, getting into some wire, with tho result that a scrimmage occurred. Ono of Jarvis's leathers and stirrup became unshipped and be was thrown heavily. For some time tho horseman did not come to, but at iast found his legs nnd escaped without serious injury. Tho marc was not in any way injured, and was subsequently galloped across tho flat with M'Combe as her pilot. That speedy filly Blue Lake has arrived at Tauherinikau, and is said to be a sure starter in tho Wardell Handicap, sis furlongs—tho concluding event on this afternoon's programme.

A largo number of horses have re ched Wangnnui to tako p,irt in the Wain 1 rotting Club's fixture, which takes pi ce to-day and on Monday, and it sec if iina weather only is required to to tho meeting a success. Some really good performers are wigneetl, and the" | t promises to bo interesting on both d Nohyithstanding the big: impost 1 cl sho.will have to carry, Lady Jled 11 t promises to start fnvonrito in Hie D c tor Handicap this afternoon, whvi she will be ridden by J. Pike. C'once n ;, her prospects, "J'ilot" in the "A ro says tho slur track performer has been I.ady Medallist, and only that they stuv her gallop equally as well in the Spring, and then fail with Bst. 121b. in the Epsom, many early-morning frequenters of Kandwick would regard the Doncaster ns all over. Tho trouble with Lady Medallist is that she has not yet shown herself a really good beginner. On tho training track she can be relied on to get over her fivst couple of furlongs at a great pace, but doing that from a barrier-start is quite a different matter. With 9st. 71b. her rider cannot well afford to bustle her at the start either, but no doubt J. Pike will handle tho mure in a manner satisfactory to her backers. From South' Africa cornea word of tho death of the Fucilo gelding, Chere Amie, who won tho Donoaster Handicap of 1901 for A. Foley, and in South Africa pulled off a Durban Handicap for H. AVootton. lz appears that Chere Amie had been fired.and turned out for a spell on a farm in tho neighbourhood of Howick, vith a view to being put into training for July and August, but during a storm he was struck by lightning and killed. In the Easter Handicap at Auckland this afternoon tho probable starters and riders are: Boanerges, Bst. 111b. (C. Jenkins); General Latoiir, Bst. 31b. (P. Brady); Domino, Bst. 81b. ( ); Soultoria, Bst. 71b. (M. Ryan); Antoinette, Bst. 61b. (C. Brown); Coronmndel, Bst. 41b, (L. Wilsen); Gold?ize, 7st. 101b. (J". Buchanan); Kakama, 7st. 01b. (B. Deeley); Crown Pearl, 7st. 4lb. (J. O'Shea); 'St. Amans, 7st. 21b. (B. Curran); Gloy, 7st. lib. (J. Conquest); Wee Olga, 7st. lib. (L. Morris); La Kcina, Cst. 101b. (J. Percival); First Wairiki, Cst. 9lb. (H. Stockley). Idealism bruised his foot when schooling at Auckland last Saturday, but, according to the Auckland "Star," the injury is not serious. Sol is reported to be an unlikely starter in the fitablechaju at the Auckland meeting.
