The Marlborough liacing Club is to bo congratulated upon its progressive efforts. Only .1 few years ago the prize on tile programmo was iIOO. Each year, however, the committee have seen their way to increase the prize money, and for the Autumn meeting, to be held on May 1 and 2, tho total of the prize money, amounts io XISOO, and the races include the Mnrlborough Cup, of 301) sovs., the President's Handicip, of 200 sovs., four other open races varying from 100 sovs. to 35 sovs., and eight hack rates, varying from fiO to 100 sovs. Tho l>lll of fare is distinctly an attractive one, and deserves the hearty' support of owners from all parts of the colony. North Island owners have for many years been strong supporters of tho club, but there is no reason now tint the .stakes have been so much increased why owners in the Canterbury district, and other districts far away from Marlborough, should not attend and suppert tho meeting with nominations. The club has becomo deseivedly popular on account of its wide hospitality, and tho hip to MaTlborough is generally looked forward to by a number of visitors. Nominations for the meeting close, with the secretary on Saturday, April 13, when a hearty response from owners is confidently looketl forward to. UNDER DRIEF AUTHORITY. TRAINER PRICE AND HIS HORSEFEED. Trainer G. I'rico had jather a strange experience at the hands of tho Thorndon railway officials when ho arrived from Awapuni shortly after mid-da;; on Friday, <m route to Kiccarton with tlioso of "Mr. Highdcn's" horses that are engaged at tho Canterbury Jockey Club's Autumn meeting, namely, Bronze, Ermengarde, Blakeney, and Lock>vood. As is usual in entering upon such a journey, Price, brought with the horses a quantity of feed sufficient to Inst them until they left tho steamer at Lyttelton. on Saturday morning. While waiting for tho horses to bo unloaded, the trainer, in order to avoid delay and lo save the railway officials trouble, instructed his lads to unload Iho feed and to assist the expressman he had employed to take it to tho steamer. At the same timo ho remarked that there might possibly bo a little "excess" to pay, and beckoned a

porter near by to inquire if that was Hie caso. Almost immediately after another official stopped up, and, without addressing Price, instructed tho porter lo take charge of the barrow, nn which the. feed was being placed, to weigh it, antl charge "excess." This new officinl _ was wearing no uniform cap by which his rank could bo distinguished, but the trainer took it for granted that ho was the station forenull), and handed the expressman a pound nodi to meet I he charge. The contents of the barrow were 21 sacks of oal-s, half a sack of bran, half a sack of chaff, half ii sack of carrots, 2.sucks of loose liny, and 2 sacks containing rugs and gear. 'J'ho wholo of this had tilted without inconvenience in tho vans in which tho horses and their altondunU travelled. Instead of rocciviuß tho chanpo he expected, I'rieo wns informed that tho charge ivns .10s. In answer lo his query as , lo how tho charge was arrived at. ho wns referred to tho. "regulations," but not being satisfied with this, ho paid tho extra half-sovereign under protest, und insisted upon bsinjf Riven a receipt so (hat he might make further inquiries. Later lie discovered that (lie receipt was made out as for "hnr-o-reed" only, and he returned In have the iinrtK'tilars correctly inserted fur "linr.'i'-lVeil, rugs, gear, eic." Tlio iiiis.l reviilt wrt< that lie t:-cnvi>,| „ r<. hearing 1.-o to say I, ami had the tulal I'xcoss charge raluml to U. Oil. \ '■•ijiiKioK rejuorlor, who hapvoned to be

present during (ho peculiar proceedings, was told that only a few days ago a wellknown local trainer had to pay (is. for the carriage of an extra ling of Jooso hay to Masterton. Xemlless to say, Price was considerably annoyed at being .so unnecessarily delayed, und when he experienced further delay in (lie- unloading of the horses, ho made sonio caustic comments on Iho bungling of the railway officials.
