EXTRAORDINARY FIASCOBOTH BOATS SWAMPED IN ROUGH WATER. RACE DECLARED VOID, By Telegraph—Press Aissociation-Copyrisht (Rec. March 31, 5.5 p.m.) London, March 30. Tho Oxford-Cambridge boat raco was rowed on tho Thames to-day, and resulted in an extraordinary fiasco. A strong westerly wind was blowing, and tho water was choppy at tho time fixed for the start. Oxford won the toss, and took the south or Surrey side of tho river. The Oxford crew quickly led by half a length, and increased their advantage to fivo lengths ad Havnod's, about a mile from the starting post. At this point the Cambridge 'Boat was swamped. Some of tho crow swam ashore, and othere were Tescucd by boats. Oxford continued steadily on through the water, but their boat also sank opposite Thorneycroft's, two and a half miles from tho starting post. Tho crew swam ashore with the boat, which they emptied, and then re-embarked. They paddled steadily on over the remaining mile and three-quarters to tho winning post at Mortlake, and finished in 2D minutes, fho slowest time since 1812. It was decided that, in view of tho mishaps to the crews, the race should bo declared void. WHY OXFORD DID NOT WIN. OUTSIDERS HELP TO. BALE OUT. (Rec. April J, 0.15 a.m.) London March 31. Tho Cambridge crew in the boat race had tho outer position, and felt the heavy weather earlier than Oxford. They shipped' water shortly after the start, and after a mile dropped the race as their boat was gradually finking. On rounding Harrod's Corner, tho boat was awash, and the crow were overbo.ird. Oxford hugged the shore, and on their boat gradually filling they pulled ashore at Chiswick, emptied it, and resumed. Thoy wore ngain waterlogged at the finish. Tho crew had a severe gruelling. Tho event was declared :i race owing to the fact that other persons than the crew had helped Oxford to balo out at Chiswick. The race will be rowed again on Monday.
