Several cases brought under the Defence Act were heard. Harry Clark and Joseph Michael Foul wero charged with having failed to attend (ho recent camp held at Sealouu. His Worship said that in similar cases heard a few days ago the jurisdiction of tho Court had been questioned, so these eases would stand down till next We(U nesday, before which day decision would be given on tho point in question. liebert Hogg was accused of refusing to take the oath of allegiance. Station-Sorswnt Darby said that ho had justboeji advised that the Defence Department did not intend to go on with tlii« case. Hogg had served in the volunteers, and a person who bad already taken the oath of allegiance was not required to again do so. Mv; Dix, who appeared for Hogg, asked for costs against the Department. Ho said the Department must have known that I hoy had no case, but they had not withdrawn the charge till ihe la't innnicnl. Mr. Dix added that Hogg had been persecuted. Solicitor's fee of\t!l I>. was allowed. Victor AVeggery, also charged with failing to take the oath vl allegiance, was given another chance to comply with the Act, his case being adjourned till April 12. Woggerv was represented bv Mr. T, llislop. VARIOUS OFFENCES. (Before Mr. W. G. Eiddell, S.M.) For failing t£ give his shop asrUlant a half-holidav, Samuel William Moir was fined 10s. - Defendant explained that tho breach of the Act occurred at a time when ho had only taken over the business. Alexander Thompson was fined £1 for having travelled between I.yttelton and Wellington cn the steamer Victoria without paying his fare. Frederick Goldsmith was fined 10?. lor bearding a moving tram. The West Coast Farmers' Trading Association, Ltd., was fined £1 lot failing to forward to the Registrar of Companies its annual list of members and its sumnwry for 1911. Joseph Hardnian was fined 10s. for insobriety, and £- 10s. for indecency. An application for a prohibition order against Susan lieid was granted. For insobriety Edith Horno was fined 10s., and Thomas Morris 10s.
