His Excellency tho Governor left for Auckland by tho Main Trunk express yesterday. To-day he is (o leavo the northern port in tho Government steamer Hincmoa for a eruiso in northern n'aters.
Iho Earl and Countess of Morton, accompanied by their three sons, tho Hon. Charles William Sholto Douglas, tho Hon. William Sholto Douglas, and (ho Hon. Ronald John Sholto Douglas, arrived in Wellington by tho New Plymouth mail train last evening. They joined tho train at Wanganui, having dono tho coach trip from Waiouru to Tokaanu, and the river trip from Pipiriki, en route from Rotorua. It is their intention to go to tho Wairarapa district for soino deer stalkng in tho course of a day or two. They will return homo via Vancouver, sailing from Auckland in tho Marama in a fortnight's lime. Lord Morton is a Scotch representative peer. Ho has extensive estates in Scotland, and his 6cat in England is Loddington Castle, Leicester.
The Hon. J. A. Hanan, Minister for Education, is being asked to receive a deputation from the Wellington Industrial Association in respect to tho deadlock which has arisen in connection with tho joint ownership of tho building in Victoria Street, at present being used as part of tho AVellington Technical School.
Mr. A. L. Ilerdmaii, M.P., will probably leavo to-day on a holiday trip to Melbourne and Sydney. Ho expects to bo away for about a fortnight.
With reference to the particulars which we are inserting in to-day's issue regarding the directorate of tho Taranaki (New Zealand) Oil Wells, Ltd., which is now commencing operations in, Taranaki at Moturoa, we are'authorised to state that Sir George Clifford, Bart., will join the board of directors after the allotment of the shares.
~,A,distinguished, party of tourists were ' among' o tho bassehgers to arrive at the Bluff from Melbourne- on Monday last. Tho party includes Sir Robert and Lady Anderson, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. M'Laughlin, and Mr. A. Hope Robertson. For the last two years Sir Robert Anderson has been Mayor of Belfast, .is Sheriff of County Monaghnn, and occupies tho position of chairman of Belfast Council Tramway Committee. Mr. M'Laughlin is a Belfast magistrate, and has largo business interests in that city. Mr. Robertson is a nephew of the late Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman. They aro all taking a keen interest in tho Chapman-Alex-ander mission, and whilst in tho Dominion intend to do a.gorrd deal of sight-see-ing. '
The advisory board of tho Now Zealand Employers' Federation has passed n resolution regretting tho resignation of Mr. H. C. Tewsley (who is about to leave for the Old Country), and wishing him success in.tho future.
Mr. Bradshaw Dive, ex-member for Egmont, left on a visit to Australia by tho Mocvaki last evening. Ho is to tour New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, and Tasmania.
A presentation took place at tho Electoral Department on Thursday, tho recipient being Mr. Frank Evans, DeputyChief Electoral Officer, who has been appointed to tho position of Registrar of Births, Deaths, and Marriages at Christchurch. Tho presentation was made by Mr. F. W. Mansfield (Chief Electoral Officer), who referred to tho pleasant relations which had always existed between Mr. Evans and the staff.
Mr. John Southey. Homo director for Australasia for the China Inland Mission, is to arrive from the south by tho Mararoa this morning. He will spend about ten days in 'Wellington, and during that lime will stay with Captain Blackburno. Mr. Southey will conduct Bible readings in tho Vivian Street Baptist Church on several days next week.
Mr, J. W. Webster, of tho China Inland Mission, who is at present on furlough in' New Zealand, leaves to-day on a vivit to Masterton and Carterton. He will afterwards make an extended tour of Nelson and tho West Coast, Mr. Webster will go to Australia about July next, and will leave tho Commonwealth on his return to China in September.
Mr. A. S. Biss, an ex-City Councillor, is to be waited on by a deputation, with the request that ho should allow himself to be nominated for tho Mayoralty.
Mr. George Jclley, well known in Wellington as tho driver of the "Daphne" motor-van, was yesterday presented by the. staff of Messrs. Hill and Barton, Ltd., with a handsomo electro-plated teapot. In making tho presentation, Mr. H. G. Hill referred to the respect they all had for Mr. Jelley and tho popularity he enjoyed "on tho road." After a humorous reply, thoso present sang "For he's a jolly good fellow."
Nows was received in Wellington yesterday of tho death at New Plymouth of Mr. Charlos Albert Bcnbow, district secretary in Taranaki for tho A.M.P. Society, ami son of the lata Mr. C. W. Bcnbow (formerly manager in Wellington for tho South British lnsuranco Company). Tho deceased, who had suffered a short illness only, was formerly very well known in Wellington, having been a prominent member of the eld Phoenix Crickot Club.
Mr. C. D. MTHwan, of tho letter-car-riers' branch of the General Post Offico, and now to Ira transferred to Christchurch on promotion, was farowelled by his confreres in tho General Post Offico last evening, and presented by tho staff with a travelling rug, and by the LetterCarriers' Social Club with an inkstand. Mr. M'Ewan also received the felicitations of his friends on his success in tho Civil Service examination.
Captain D. Watson, secretary to the New Zealand branch of tho Merchant Service Guild, was a passenger for the south by tho Maori last evening. Ho is proceeding to Dunedin in order to lx> present at tho re-opening of tho Conciliation Council in connection with tho award between tho masters and officers and tho Union Company.
