Seventy-one years ago the barque Williahr Bryan, of 3)2 tons, commanded by Captain: If Lean, arrived off the Sugar.Loaves with H married and twenty-two single adults, and 70 children. . London, and Mr. A. Aubrey.' (son of Colonel Aubrey, of tho Horse Guards). The William Bryan sailed from' Plymouth Sound 011 November 19, 1840, and after li favourable passage~the vessel .entered Cloudy Bay oh March 19, 1841,.f0r orders, rinding no one in the Bay able to give him nny information respecting the site of the new settlement, Mr. CutfieM hired a cutter and proceeded to Wellington, for tho purpose of seeing Colonel Wakefield on the subject. After a brief stay, lie returned with a pilot, and. wif.h orders to proceed to Taranaki.
