It was a most beautiful day at Opaki, and a record crowd turned out to witness the racing, which proved to bo the best ever seen on tho course. The principal event was tho Wnipipi Cup, which went to tho Fordell-trained Miscal. Tho win was well received, as tho animal in question ran with no hick at both tho Wanganui and Dannevirko meetings. The accommodation provided for backers proved insufficient, and several times during tho day tho starting times were delayed till tlio money could bo rung on tho machine. Tho racing throughout was very good, and somo keen finishes resulted. This was particularly tho caso in tho Open Flying, Welter, and tho Dash Handicap events. All of these races were won by head margins only. In tho concluding event tho record dividend of tho season was paid by Goldsley, who defeated Gay Lawless by a head, with Leapuki in a lino and tho whole field bunched. A very big field started in tho Maiden Hack race, but the public estimate of the possibilities was sound, and tho second favourite, Daybreak, won nicely. The Napier two-year-old was in charge soon after the start, and, with her big pull in tho weights, won comfortably. Miss Itoberts, tho second horse, hails from Marton, and can gallop well. SII9 wa3 fully extended down the long straight, but did not flinch, and beat tho rest as comfortably as Daybreak beat her. Toney, who was raado favourite, is a good horse, but seems to want a distance of ground as he cannot begin well. In tho March Handicap liangiatua, who looked 111 perfect: condition, was mado a better favourite than Dirge and Full Rate, who were evenly backed. The black colt took charge at tho start, and led to the home turn, where Te Eoti took his place at the head of affairs. Dirge then came very fast, and a most interesting struggle took place. TIIO Porirua mare appeared to be getting rhe better of tho struggle, but her rider mistook tho winning post and stopped riding, with tho result that Te Eoti got a neck advantage. Einnierson, upon realising his error, was unable to reduce Negative was a fair third, then came Full Hato and Rangiatna. Tho Foxton gelding, Lord Renown, was a strong fancy in tho milo Hack race, and may have been a trillo unlucky to lose. His rider appeared to hold a "winning hand at the turn into tho straight, but 110 got chopped out and then failed to get clear again. The grey horse, Mira, was hard ridden with tli'o stick for over a furlong, and answering every call she won by a length from Glenfern, ivho had made the running throughout. Kingswell, who was placed third, camo. very fast over tho last furlong. There were 110 scratchings in tho Cup, favouritism being divided between Son Plnie and St. Felix. The start was a good one, all but Golden Loop leaving in a line. There was no pace over the first quarter, and-soon alter passing tho mile post St. Felix went out. As they van across the bottom of tho course Miscal galloped up to the bay horse, and tho pair entered the straight just clear of The Rover and Sir Solo. The last-named was unlucky half->vay down the straight when (tying to get. np between tho two leaders. Half a furlong from homo Miscal appeared to be winning comfortably, but St. Felix ran on well, and Golden Loop also camo fast 011 tho outside. A great struggle then took placo over the last one hundred yards, and Miscal won by a head, with Golden Loop half a length away, followed by Sir Solo.
Aloha was the favourite in the si.v-fur-lons hack racc, with Xukuatu nearly as well backed. The former was unlucky enough to K"t into trouble rounding I lie bottom bend, anil this gave Xukuatu a useful break. Mervimac eaine fast over •he last. bit. and cut the favourite nut pf second nlnco. Allurement, showed up well till half-iv&y dowu the straisht, njid
w coming back to form, but Rojigomau, ! Who got out well, failed to go the pace, and finished in Iho roar. Tho issue in tho Ladies' Bracelet was voted most open, and backer.-! did not 1 display any great desiro to invest their money. Tim si art was a .splendid one, Good Form being the quickest to find her : feet. With a couple of furlongs gone Matapouri joined her in the lead, and : (lie pair led a bunched field down the : back, tlu» mist prominent being .Miriam, IVinco KdJie, and Elfish. As they came into a line for home, Elfish took "charge, and thence onwards (lie issue was not in doubt. Tho rest of the field were strung out badly, and Sironvar, who finished a furbng away, was greeted with ironical cheers. Tlie Welter was a good race for seven furlongs, but after I hat paint was reachcd Master Sylvia and Negative left the field, and the latter won by u nose at the finish. Aiterthough'. anil Master Sylvia led to the straight, where the field closed up. Aiterthongnt compounded n long way off the post, but. Master Sylvia finished well, find Negative only got up in tho last fifty yards. Moloch and Royal Marine were, tailed off. Tho winner finished very fast in the open six-furlong handicap, and on this pccuunt was made favouriie in the race under revieiv. The betting in this race was decidedly oven, the first four favourites being evenly backed. The concluding event was a big scramble but the finish was a stirring one. After a slight delay at the barrier a fair dispatch .was effected, all but Aratiatia leaving the mark well together. Goldslcy was first away, but Gay Lawless soon headed iijin, and' put a break of thrco lengths on the field, which at the end of a furlong was strung out. Gay Lawless led to within a few strides of the post, when Goldslev caught her and beat lior by a head. "Leapuki came very fast and got third money, and several others were well HP- " .
