Palmcrston North, March 2H. A successful sperts gathering was held yesterday afternoon by the Aokautere Athletic Club, in Mr. S. li. I.ancastcr's paddock, wlun there was a large attendance of visitors, though the very threatenins weather pvevented a number of people going out. from town. The programme included a number of luuvo events, which provided gcod sport, whilst tho running events v;ere keenly contested. Hunters' competition—H. JJ. Lancaster, 1. 880 yds Handicap—Barnes, 1. Maiden hunters' competition— Ji. M'Ewen, 1. Members' Handicap, 100yds.—J.. Mexted, 1. Turning on horseback—H. 1?. Lancaster, 1. Sheep guessing—H. ICilsbv, 1. There was a larije audience at the Opera House last night, when a concert was held in aid of tlio Brass Band and Friendly Societies' Council funds. A splendid programme had been arranged, and nearly the whole of the items wero rcdemanded.
The hockey season was practically opened yesterday afternoon, when a couple of matches were played on tho slrow grounds. One, in which a good deal of interest was centred, vas between teams representing Collinson and Cunniughame and C'ollinso r .i and Son v. Durward and Co. and C. M. Ross and Co. Considering it was tlio first game of the season, there was some line play, and after a well-contested game, the Ross-Durward combination won by Jive goals to two. After the match both teams were entertained at tea by Mrs. J. Cunniiighamo, A special meeting of members of tho Manawatu employers is to bo held here next Monday evening, to consider the present industrial troubles. Mr. W. Pryor, secretary of tho Employers' Federation, is to bo present, and will outlino the proposal for an organisation scheme and defence fund. ,
