DOMINION ART GALLERY.

A CANTERBURY OPINION.

(By Telegraph— Press Association.) Christchurch, Jlareh 27. T)io Canterbury Society of Arts, in a communication to the l'rimo Minister 011 the subject. of the proposed establishment of n Dominion Art Gallery in Wellington, stales llu.l it is convinced that it would not bo in the best interests of art in Now Zealand that a Dominion art collect ion be founded in one centre. In Xcw Zealand there were four cities of equal importance, and an attempt to moke any ono of these a centre of interest for the whole could not possibly prove .successful. It was absolutely necessary that in each city there should be equal educational advantages. The principal object of a public art nailery was (0 provido the highest models of art production, and it was obvious that a central art gallery could not bo of much service to students resident in the other cities, as any work to be of educational value needs to bo studied again and again. The society recommends the continuance of Government grants to art societies, ami the adoption of an interchange of pictures between the societies for definite periods, thus enabling those residing in any ono city to have ail opportunity of seeing and studying the whole collection of the Dominion in turn.
