BUTCHERS ON STRIKE.
TROUBLE AT GISBOENE. (By Telegraph.—Profs Association.) Gisborno, March SO, The operative butchers in the. retail trade were to go on strike at', 3 o'clock this afternoon. Recently an award was arranged on the Auckland scale. The masters declined to sign, objecting to being part of the Auckland district. Tim men intimate that unless the award was signed by 3 o'clock they will strike. The musters are sitting liyht. . Thirty nicit arc conccnied. Later. The Strike Conference was held hetweon the men and the makers this afternoon, Mr. Westbrooko, inspector of awards, attended, and endeavoured |o efi'ect a settlement, but was unsuccessful, and the men ceased work at 3 run., but the shops were opened shortly afterwards by the master butchers, by whom the business will bo carried on. There does not appear to be any prospect of a settlement at present unless the maslcrs concede to the men's demands that their ngi-ooinout should permit of alliliation with the, Auckland union. Anoilier conference will be held to-morrow morning.
