For some time past there lias been considerable speculation as to the decision of unions affiliated to I lie Federated Drivers' Association 011 the proposal to cancel registration under the Arbitration Act. Official information lias been withheld, but word has reached Wanganui that action lias been deferred till it is seen what the Government intends doing in the way of altering tho constitution and personnel of the Arbitration Court. Captain Craven, of the Tyser liner Indrapura, who is making his first visit to this port, speaks in high terms of tho work done by tho Harbour Board which ho says has been carried out. 011 the right lilies to make Wanganui one of the most up-to-dato ports of the Dominion. At a special meeting of tho Borough Council last evening there was discussed the vexed question of tenders for tho coal supply to tho gas works, in connection with which tho contract was lot to' a tenderer who put in a price after the other tenders had been niado public. No finality was reached- and the matter has been further adjourned till the next ordinary meeting. Tho Council also discussed' tho engineer's report 011 tho waterworks extension, but was not disposed to adopt it in its entirety at the present juncture. The Mayor is giving notice of motion to raiso a loan of ,£7OOO only for the construction of a storage tank at Westmere.
