FIGHTING FOR FOOD.
GREAT DESTITUTION REPORTED. LAMENTABLE STORIES. (Rec. March 24, 5.S p.m.) London, March 23. There is great destitutioa in Leeds, where w men and children are crying for food. The authorities are doing their utmost to alleviate the sufferings of the poor. Many more Yorkshire and Lancashire mills are closing, and an additional 5000 workers are idle. In Lancashire some of the railways are reducing, and others are stopping, Sunday trains. Men, women, and children at Manchester havo been fighting for food. Lamentable stories of hunger and tireless homes come from the northern towns. Six hundred railway workers at Bangor, Wales, havo received notice of dismissal. The school authorities are feeding thousands of/ children dnify in tho pottery districts. Twelve thousand are being fed daily at Leeds. Vigorous relief measures are being organised,
The Vicar of Buijlem (Staffordshire) has served forty thousand meals.
The relief being 'given in many places is inadequate, and the Government is considering measures for increasing the power of Poor Law Guardians.
The distress'at Cardiff and Swansea, in Nottinghamshire; at the Htirtlcpools, and in Scotland, is growing acute.
