Captain Wildtnan, n jun., saw a man—who, ho states, was e walking along a stringer at the end of the .. wharf—overbalance and fall into the g water. Captain Wilduiau drew his second ~ officer's attention to tho occurrence, and J, they both eaw the man come to the sur--0 faoo and grasp some of tho woodwork unt derneath tho wharf. Ho remained in thia 1 position, with his head well above water,. . g lacing the steamer until thoso on board j tho .Kennedy wcro too far off, to seo what ho was doing. At tho tinio of passing the Clydo Quay Wharf tho Kennedy was from s 200 to 250 yards off. } Immediately on berthing his vessel, . Captain Wildman reported what ho had r seen to tho Harbour Hoard officials and [ to the polico. An official went to tho scene 1 of the supposed mishap on a bicvclo, and . soon after his arrival a constable made . his appearance. They both searched the . wharf thoroughly, and tho Harbour Board t man went down underneath the structure D and searched and called ont, but no trace 5 or sign of tho man could be seen. 0 Somo peoplo wcro fishing from the wharf _ and somo men were underneath the wharf j. intent upon tho same business. On being r asked if they had seen anything of a man 1 in tho water, or had seen or heard of nnvj ono foiling off the wharf, they replied in s tho negative. Tho only, indication, if it 2 maybe taken as an indication, of anybody j having been on tho wharf and having dis--5 appeared was a fishing lino tied to the head of a ladder, which extends from the 1 ttirj of the wharf to tho water. 1 Subsequently the polico dragged the har- . bour in tho vicinity of the wharf, but s found nothing. When questioned by a reporter concern. s ing tho occurrence, Captain Wildman slated positively that ho saw the man fnll into the water and como up again. Ilia second officer was also positive concerning tho episode. It is thought that tho man managed to get out of tho water, scramble ashore via the woodwork underneath tho wharf, and depart before ho was seen.
