POLICE OVERPOWERED.
TROUBLE IN SCOTLAND. SOUP KITCHENS OPENED. London, March 21. Fire hundred pickets who were endeavouring to prevent 100 non-unionists working at Hie ICirkconnel pits, Scotland, overpowered the police, they used sticks and stones. Police reinforcements arrived and order was restored. Several policemen and strikers were injured. Ten of the rioters were arrested. The chapels and churches are opening soup kitchens at Middlesbrough. There are many pathetic scenes. Hundreds of men and women are besieging the Town Hall in order to Togisler their names for the groceries and fuel which are being provided out of tho Mayor's relief fund. Strike pay at Cannock Chase, Staffordshire, has been reduced to ss. a week. Jinny non-unionists at Cannock are prepared to retnrn to work, but tho owners do not favour a partial return, fearing trouble. Tom Mann was remanded in custody to appear at Salford. The strike pay to miners up to March 23 will amount to .£578,000, and to members of other unions to .£210,000.
UNITED STATES TROUBLE. A STRIKE IMMINENT. (Rec. March 22, 9.45 p.m.) New York, March 22. The Cleveland coal miners' demand of an increase of teu per cent, in wages has been rejected by tho owners.
A strike is imminent unless tho arbitration proposals put forward on bebalf of the operators nro adopted.
