(Before Mr. YV. Cl. Riddell, S.M.) THEFT AT RAILWAY STATION. A charge of having stolen a handkerchief containing two r.iilv.-av tickets and .-&) !)s. in nnr.ey (total value, J?3 lis. (id.) from Mrs. Annie YVhilemon, was made against L'lizahelh Stenuett, an elderly woman. The defendant, who was represented by Mr. I'. W. .fa.'kson, pleaded nut guilty." The prosecution brought witnesses to stale that Mrs. Whitman had into the waiting roam at tho i.ambton Station, and had left her money (tied in a handkerchief) on a table for a few minutes. Detective Cameron had been summoned, and had found three sovereigns anil some silver in the pussession of the defendant. .Mrs. Whileman staled that she had had Hires sovereigns and some silver in her .handkerchief. The defendant denied the charge, but the Court convicte.l her, and ordered her to make restitution, and to appear for scalene.; when called upon. UNDEIt PROVOCATION. Afl'-r hearing a deal of evidence, his War-hip said that Wright had received 'provocation, and, in the circumstances, had probably acted rea.-onably. lor there was testimony to the effect that Wright had been knocked under a railway carriage.
