NOTES AND COMMENTS.

CBt Glesoob.] A pleasing feature of the Nelson meeting was Ihe success of Mr R ]•' Hnrli-v a the barrier. There was not'a bad start throughout he meeting, and Mr. Ihiriev did not find it necessary to inflict any lines. His success comes at a useful staee as several racing clubs are ' shortly to require new starter-. y The Palmerston North-owned Lndrone, .id ml winner at Nelson, was brought to Wllington on the j'ateeim yeslenlav, and later in the day was railed to Otaki by K. Hatch, who rode the horse on botii

IS. Deeley, who rodo eight winners at the Mine meeting, and thus brought his winning total up to sixlv-live, and C Luiersoii were also passengers by tlio iateena.

.At , 1 .1 10 . conclusion of the Nelson meeting, Waipnimi, winner of the principal handicap on both days, was sold for ,£135 o Mr. .1 J Corry, of Blenheim, and in iituro the Conqueror gelding will bo trained by A. Eoro, at Riverkmds. Considering that Waimimii defeated Beacon on both days ami that when asked to put a pneu on the latter Mr. Cornnamed 300 guineas, tho Blenheim sportsman, seems to have all tho best of the deal m securing Waipunui at such a small outlaw

the lato owner of Waipunui is now negutiatiug for tho purchase of Portland Bill, another dual winner at tho meeting.

, Returned visitors from tho Nelson meeting speak in high terms of Sinnpis, whom they declare has improved out of all knowledge. One of her admirers went «o far ts to say that Mr. Dun-ant's fillv would not bo out of place in any six-furloni* handicap with about 7st. 51b.'on her back. Mio returned homo yesterday in chaigo of IT. Fletcher. As she has 'now incurred a double penally for the Mastodon meeting, it is unlikely that she will be seen out on tho first day at Opaki. Mr. H. Whitney's team, Mount Victoria, Mediterranean, and Aenia, nra expected to arrive back from Blenheim by tho Patnena tonight. While on the subject of Memlolism recently, the special commissioner of the London "Sportsman" mentioned that St. Simon did get a wholo grey—Posthumous by name—out of Pontoon,, through whom the grey colour cauio. 1 never saw Posthumous in his younger days, but inasmuch as in the Stud Book he is described as "brown or grey" it would not perhaps lie strictly correct to describe him as a "grey," although, to look nt him now ono would certainly describe him as being of that colour.

N.yland, who reached Awapmii from Napier on Wednesday, is still lame, but it is possible that his breakdown is not quite as serious as was at first imagined. Nominations for tho Wellington Racing Club's meeting close on Friday next. Mr. A. Hyde, will rido Elfish in the Ladies' Bracelet at Masterton next Thursday.

Mr. H. Whitney had three horses racing at Nelson, but tho only one to score was Mount. Victoria (Signalman—Primula). Mediterranean was said to be galloping in improved stylo after his spell, but the running did not sustain this opinion.

Mr. Geo. Morse, tho well-known handicupper, was present at flic Opunako meeting on Monday last. There was a record attendance at thu fixture, and the lotalisalor figures showed tin increase of .£2334 compared with the figures for tho previous year. My. A. Morse, who had charge of the starting, was very success-

D. Nyhan's Hutt team of trotters failed to pay expenses at the Nolson fixture, the only one to gain n place being Ding Dong, who ran second to Stella Leigh (one of the Dictator breed). The latter had to register better time when she scored on tho second daw

Uniform and Pukekura, two stable mates, ran first and second in the, trotting event at Opunako. Trainer IT. Barriiclough was on' the rnnner-up, who was a much better favourite than the winner.

When Topic ran second in the Maiden Plate at Opunake, Mr. D. J. Goodwin lost the second money and dividend through claiming 51b. apprentice allowance. A similar thing happened at Wnnganui, when Topic finished third. The Conqueror gelding, Wnipunui, proved a remunerative bargain to his West Coast owner, who purchased him out of J. Sullivan's Ashhurst stable about six mouths ago. He won the two principal events at Grcymouth in October. At the Christmas meeting he inn second in tho Cup to Curator, and won (ho big handicap on the second day. He did not meet Curator at Nelson this week, but bad ho done so he would probably have proved that the Greymouth Cup running was not correct. Since leaving (his island Waipunui has won five times and filled second berth twice.

Blenheim stables wero well represented at tho Nelson meeting. S. Tapp tool; no fewer than seven horses through, A. Roro took two, and in addition there were some trotters from Blenheim. A number of Blenheim sportsmen motored through to tho gathering. Thcso included Mr. Percy Xash, Mr. Seymour, who won three races with the progenv of Portland Lady, Mr. .1. ,T. Corrv, owner of Beacon, Mr. G. Griffith.?, and Mr. L. Griffiths, who was on the lookout for nominations for tho Marlborough meeting. FIXTURES. March 28 and 2!>-Mastorton J.C. 'Autumn.
