The- caso in which Emily Humphries wifo nf Frank Humphries, farmer, of Cl.ireville. claimed XfiOO damages from her brother, lieorgc Waller Kempt on, farmer, for alleged slander, was continued in Iho Supreme. Court al Mastcrlon to-day. Wore Mr. Justice- Edwards and a jury of twelve. George Walter Kempton, Hie defendant, iviis subjected to a. long and searching cress-cxamiimtion by Sir Jolin Kindtay. Henry William Kempton. brother of' (ho defendant, deposed to having visited ilio house of tho Humphries, in consequence of certain rumours he had heard, and having witnessed improprieties between Donnld Finlayson and Mrs. Humphries, lie had charged Mrs. Humphries (his sister) with her misconduct, and had told her she was a disgrace to tho family. Under cross-examination, the witness admitted that, he had served two years for shesp-stealiug, ami that he had lived with another man's wifo while his own wife was alive. After hearing several other witnesses for the defence and addresses of counsel, his Honour summed up strongly against the defendant. lie stated that, in the whole course of his experience he hart never heard of so remarkable a. case as (hat of a man openly attacking the chastity of his sister. The jury, after a retirement of three and a half hours, returned at 0.45 p.m. with a three-fourths verdict for the plaint.iff, and awarded .£l5O damages, being .650 on each of the three counts. His Honour entered up judgment accordingly, with costs according to scale, and certified to .Cl 5 15s. for extra day's trial, and £3 3s. each day for feecond counsel.
