Both llin'licensed reserved their defence, and were committed for trial. Bail was not asked for. Brown was further charged with the larceny of JMO, and remanded for two months. Macpherson was then charged with stealing three sums of .£l2 10s. each. Tho acting-manager of the company produced a written confession, in tho course of which Macpherson had stated that ever sinco ho had held his present position he had been tampering with tho company's moneys. The defalcations would amount to about .CIiOOO. lie would tnko the money and alter the cash-books in different ways in order to balance accounts, lie suggested getting Mr. Lough, from Christcliurch, to straighten up the cash-books, as lie was the only officer of the company with sufficient experience to do this. He supposed it was the old story of hoping to make good a shortago and getting deeper into the mire. The general manager had warned him against races, but he was then in too deep to stop betting. The branch manager for the company gave evidence that so far there had been discovered a shortage of ,£BOO more than tho confession showed.

Macpherson admitted that the confession was true, and was committed for trial.
