OBITUARY.

ME, F. DE C. MALET. (By Telegraph.— Press Association,) Christchurch, March 21. Mr. Frederick do C. -Malet, a forme* chairman of the Hank of New Zealand, died this morning. He came to Aew Zealand in 1800. and was in the Governmont service till about 18iu, having served chiefly in Westland and Canterbury. Ho wits Registrar of the New Zealand University from 1872 to 1871, secretary to Canterbury College 1b.3-(>, and tea rears later becanio chairman oi the College Board, holding office till 1894. Ho was Government nominee on the board of directors of the Bank of New Zca T land, and chairman from 1902 to 190b. Ha was interested in several large undertakings locally, being particularly prominent in the frozen meat industry. For some years ho was managing director 01 the "Lyttelion Times." The Bev. Win. Thomson, M.A., 8.D., who died at Grafton Road, Auckland, on Tuesday, was a distinguished graduate of tho' University of Edinburgh. Aher completing the usual course oi study for the Presbyterian Church ho was ordained by the Presbytery of Greenoek to the Church of Scotland of that town. He was afterwards transferred to tho charge of Strathnclfer in tho Presbytery of Inverness. Having a desire to servo the Uiurcli in the colonies, he made a hurried visit of inspection to Canada, but a few days sufficed to show him that it was not an inviting sphere for him, and he at once turned his attention to Xew Zealand. Hβ arrived in the Dominion in 1890, and after being received by the Presbyterian General Assembly he served tho Church in several sphere?, until ho was niduoted into the newly-formed charge in AAaipu on June 1, 1698. Tho late Mr. Thomson was an excellent Gaelic scholar, and preached regularly in that language to the Highlanders of that settlement. Later he was induced to take cliarw of the Presbyterian congregation ot l<l3l, M»dlio resigned from AVaipn on August G, 11X11. The climate of Fiji did not suit him, and he returned to New Zealand, and was inducted to the charge of Coromaudel on December 20, 1901. Ho was ca led back to AVaipu, and inducted 011 April J3, 1907, and was minister of that charge up to the time of his death. Mr. r l horn son was much respected by a large congregation, who now mourn tho loss of a liighly-o* teemed pnstor.
