His Excellencv the Governor will arrive from Auckland by the Main Train express this afternoon. Ho is to lay tho foundation stone of the new Parliamentary Buildings to-morrow afternoon.
Their Excellencies Lord and Lady Islington tendered a. garden party to tho citizens of Auckland at Government House, Auckland, yesterday. About 1000 guests were invited, and although tho weather was dull the attendance was very large.—Press Association.
Mr. E. B. JJurdekin has been appointed Dopuly Official Assignee at Napier, vice Hi , . K. X. H. Browne, resigned.
Mr. C. H. Mills has been appointed Crown Solicitor at Blenheim.
Mr. S. Snnndcrs, editor of tho ''Lyttelton Times," and Mr. Mark Cohen, editor of tho Dunedin "Star," camo to town yesterday.
Mr. AY. Mack, of the firm of Hessra. .Tonkins and Mack, left on a houday trip to England by the lonic yesterday. A largo number of Mr. Mack's friends and employees assembled on tho wharf to bid him ton voyage.
Miss Ethel Irving and the members of her comedy company will leave for Sydney to-day' by the AVarrimoo, en route to England.'
At Tuesday's meeting of the Christchurch Drainage Board leave of absence was granted to Air. AValter Hill, tho hoard's chairman, for six months. Mr. Hill intends to visit Great Britain and tho Continent in the near future. Mr. H. J. Otley and Mr. S. A. Staples eulogised (ho work done by Mr. Hill, and wished him a pleasant voyage.
Mr. O. A. Banner, of the Hnwkesbury Agricultural College staff, is leaving that institution in April for New Zealand to take up the position of Director of Technical Instruction and supervisor of agricultural training for tho southern district of AVanganui Educational Board. As sunervisor of agriculture ho will havo 40 "primary schools under his supervision, with two high schools. Mr. Banner was a student at Hawkesbury College, and then went to Bathurst Farm as actingscience master: Back at the Hawkesbury College, he was assistant lecturer in chemistry and physics, and last year, while Mr.'Nusson was away, was assistant scienco master.
At the meeting of tlio council of tho Dioceso of Melbourne, the following resolution was carried unanimously, on the motion of the Kcv. C. H. Barnes and Dr. Leepor:—"That this council ; offers its heartv congratulations to the Rev. Canon Sadlicr, M.A., 8.D., on his appointment to the Bishopric of Nelson, New Zealand, and expresses its fervent wish that jus future career ni.iy bo richly crowned with the Divine blessing."
Before leaving for England Mr. J. M. Muir, warehouse manager for Joseph Nathan and Co., was entertained by the staff and presented during tho course of a pleasant evening with a cheque as a token of their esteem. The presentation was made in graceful terms by tho secretary, Mr. Port. Mr. l'ettigrew, on behalf of tho travellers, eulogised Mr. Muir s tact and business ability.
Mr Henry K. Cackctt, of the advertising waff of "the D.1.C., has been presented by his fellow employees with a purse of sovereigns as an expression of their regard on his leaving the firm to undergo a course of treatment at the Otaki Sanatorium. The presentation was accompanied with tho wish that ho would Boon be restored to complete health.
Mr. W. G. Cullender, son of Mr. W. Callendcr, general manager of tho Bank of New Zealand, leaves for Sydney on route to London by the Warrimoo to-day. ]£o is H-oiny Home to gain experience in architectural work.
Mr. K. 11. W. Bligh, of tho White Cross League, arrived in Wellington yesterday morning from Ihe south with tho object of Riving lectures, lie is staying at tho Y.M/C.A.
• Mr. M. J. Reardon, tho well-known local Labour leader, who was recently operated on for appendicitis, is now convalescent, and is expected to bo about again in a day or two.
Mr. \V. F. Kennedy has boon appointed Registrar of Births, Deaths, and Marriages at I'ntca. Jlr. J. P. Barrett has been appointed to a similar position at Otnhuhu.
Sir Arthur Guinness has arranged to leave Wellington to-night, for Lyttellon, with the intention of going on by train to llhiff and joining the Jlaungaimi, which (•ails on Monday for Melbourne. Sir Arthur Guinncss's tour will extend over four weeks, (hiring which ho will visit Sydney, Brisbane, Newcastle, Melbourne, Adelafde, Ballarat, Bondigo, and the Blue Mountains. Hβ will make inquiries into the coal and goldmining industries of tho different States, the conditions of labour in tho mines, the legislation affecting the industry, and the assistance given by (he States Governments to prospecting;. Lady Guinness, who is nt present in Sydney, will accompany him on his tour.
