LOCAL INDUSTRIES.
SHORTAGE OF SKILLED WORKERS. A reported shortigo of skilled workers ill a number of Dominion industries was a subject briefly discussed at the meeting of the Industrial Association last evening. The sesretary (Mr. H. I'. Allen) mentioned that the Wellington Woollen Company would be doing a much larger volume of business if it could obtain more hands. At present contracts were being refused simply on account of ;* shortage of labour. .Members stated, in discussion, that there Was a shortage of workers in the furniture trade, copper-smithing, tinsmithing, plumbing, baking, and other industries, it was ngrecd that the Government would be wise to follow the example of tho Australian Commonwealth, and do all it could to attract skilled workers to the Dominion as immigrants. It was pointed out thai, at present, the Government contented itself, in the main, with encouraging the immigration of farm workers and domestic servants, and it v;as held that the manufacturing prospects of the country would justify a big effort being made to induce skilled workers from abroad to come to Xew Zealand. It was filially decided to deal with tho subject in detail at the next meeting of the association.
