INDUSTRIAL ASSOCIATION.

« COMPETITIONS SOCIETY AND INDUSTRIES. MODIFIED PROPOSALS. The General Committee of tho Wellington Provincial Industrial Association met . t' evening, L. It. .Partridge presiding over an attendance of eleven members. A letter was received from Mr. J. Dykes (secretary of tho New Zealand Competitions Society), asking the association to donate a small prize in connection wjth tho noxt annual festival of the society to bo held in October. Mr. Dykes suggested that the commercial community benefited while tho competitions were iii progress, owing to the large number of competitors who visited Wellington. Industrial associations in other towns, ho said, had assisted their local competition societies as suggested in the case of Wellington. The secretary stated that, in connection with tho proposal, made by Mr. J. Dykes, that a shop-window display of local manufactures should bo organised whilo tho competitions were in progress, ho had sent out some 300 circular letters. Tho replies sent in were by no means numerous. A letter from the Now Zealand Shopkeepers' Association indicated that its members did not think it would pay to go to any expense in the matter. The president said that apparently tho shopkeepers did not feel inclined to 'mnko a week of it unless they were compensated by the manufacturers. Unless tho association or tho manufacturers liked to spend tho money required, ho did not see that tho proposal could be gone on with. Mr. Bull said that tho shopkeepers found that by giving up their windows for the display of local manufactures they injured their ordinary trails. Mr. S. S. Williams romarked that the lesult of previous industries weeks—there had been two—had not been encouraging to shopkeepers. The best way to display local products was to hold an exhibition as the association had dono in tho previous year.

It was agreed, 011 the motion of Mr. Ballinger, that local manufacturers, including the newspaper offices, should ho asked to throw open their factories to visitors, from October 16 to October 30. at such times as might be convenient. Mr. Dallingor suggested that the factory-own-ers might issue tickets of admission.

After somo discussion, it was agreed, again on the motion _of Mr. Rallinger, to assist the Competitions Socioty by donating prizes for essays, to be written by school children, during the next competition 'veok. Competitors are to bu required to tako somo local industry as tboir Mibject, and must be cliildron attending primary schools, The proposal was caiTiol subject to tile approval of the Competitions Society and tho Teachers' Association.

The secretary (Mr. H. F. Allen) read a telegram from the Canterbury Industrial Association, stating that it had telegraphed congratulations to tho Prime Minister iritli reference to the part of tho Governor's Speech alluding to tariff revision.
