IBy Telesraph.—Special Correspondent.) Palmcrston N., March 19. Tho monthly meeting of the High School Board of Governors was held last night, Mr. W. 11. Coilmgwood presiding, i'lio Education Department wrote, asking tor particulars of the handed over by the -Mayoress in aid of the school funds, and the secretary was instructed to send tho details. It was decided to call lor tenders ior further improvements to the grounds, etc., at tho High School. The treasurer reported that tlio Technical School; ei'o 1 ln\d been paid for, and there was still .Oil) to credit on this account. • The rector reported that tho roll number was now 231, 157 boys and 7i gins, with average attendance 215, a number of tho .students being absent through an cpidomic ol' mumps. A class in pracltcal ironwork had been started, and classes in swimming wero conducted by Miss Hazelden and Mr. Foote. Ho thought an effort should bo made to have the school baths ready for next season. Tho director of tho Technical School reported on tho work of the school, The results of tlio Standard VI proficiency mamination had come to hand, and reflected great credit on the teacher, Mr. C. 11. Warden. Of eighteen presented, eleven gained proficiency, threo competency, and four failed. Tho plumbers' scholarship was won by li. Raeburn, G. Quaylo being second. The lalter's work was also very good, and lie recommended tliat ho should bo given a term's free tuition. Ten students wero presented for . the South Kensington examinations, and uiue passed.
The annual meeting of tho board was afterwards held. .Tho balance-sheet to December 31 last showed a debit balance ill the Technical School funds of Jiil'i ISs. 2d., and a credit balance on the High School fund of .£l4B 7s. lid. Tho chairman's report stated that a debt of gratitude was due to the Mayor and Mayoress for their splendid efforts in liquidating the debts on tho two schools, tho result of their work being an addition to tho funds of .£IOOO. The average on the school roll last year was nine above tho previous year. The Technical School also luid progressed most satisfactorily during the year. Mr. W. H. Collingwood was re-elocted chairman, and Mr. ti. Hirsch treasurer. Various sub-committees wero appointed. The secretary's salary was increased by J." 20 pel' annum. 'Die Hibernian Society celebrated St. .Patrick's Day with an entertainment in Zealandia Hall last evening, which proved most enjoyable. Pictures were shown of scenes in Ireland, and accompanied by appropriate vocal and instrumental music. Songs were contributed by Mrs. E. 1!. Broad, Miss Driscoll (Wellington), Messrs. T. Rogers and 15, Jacobs, recitations by Messrs M'Cnllough and Olliver, a quartett by Messrs. Stebbing, Johnston, Patten. and Tabor, and an Irish jig by Mr. .Tafi'ray, all of which were encored, Mr. E. D. Hoben also gavo a short address en "St. Patrick."
A meeting of footballers in the Western District of l'almorston, under tho Manawatu Rugby Union's new district scheme, was held last night, when it was decided io form a club, and tho following officers elected Patron, Mr. D. Buick. M.P.; president, Mr. A. Mahon; vice-presidents, Messrs. E. J. Nash, A. Guy, L. Gcorpi,' and C. 11. Warden; secretary, Mr. L. Shecrin; treasurer, Mr. J. Brown; committee, Mes.-rs. A. Low, R. Monro, AY. Carruthers, L. Ford, Bargent (1!), and J. A. l'awson; delegates to Rugby TJnion, Messrs. .f. A. Pawson, J. F. Manning, and C. 11. Warden.
Tho Mayor lias received an invitation from Sir Joseph Ward to be present at Hie laying of the foundation stone of tho new Parliament Buildings by his Excellency the Governor at Wellington on Saturday next. Mr. H. Kissel, postmaster at Palmcrston, is spending his annual holidays at Auckland. Mr. Gannaway, of Wellington, is at present in charge of the ofiice he.ro. At the opening of the Police Court this morning, Mr. A. D. Thomson, S.M., referred to Sub-Inspector Norwood's removal from l'almorston to Grcymouth. Though regretting his departure, ho complimented the Sub-Inspector on his -promotion lo the position of inspector. Members of the Bar also complimented Mr. Nonfood on his promotion.
At the Police Court, before Mr. A. D. Thomson, S.M., Ercc Keith Brown, 112 years of ago, proceeded, through his father (Charles Brown), against. J. M'Leod for the sum of -CS damages in respect of a bicyclo accident. After hearing evidence* the Magistrate said he could not conclndo that defendant was any more to blame than the boy, and dismissed tho case.
