CONSIGNMENT NOTES.
A NEW REGULATION. ,' (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Dunedin, March 13.' •A deputation waited on the Hon. J. A. Millar to-day from the Chamber of Commerce with reference to the recently gazetted special, rate of charges for understatements in consignment notes in respect to ■ goods delivered by railway. The deputation did not object to the iinEosition of a penalty in cases of fraud, ut when'a simple,-mistake was mada by a servant, it was considered a penalty should not be imposed. Tho Minister, iu reply, said tho regulation was aimed at sawmillers, through whom the Department had lest a considerable amount of revenue on account of misstatements in consignments. Wheni they found understatement of 1700 ft. on one truck it was time to take action. It was not intended that the- regulation should apply all round, but only to sawmillers! The regulation was gazetted in accordance with the Act. The Department wns taking action against two large sawniillers, and it was necessary for the purpose of the action to ciizctto it. When he returned to Wellington he would look into the matter again with n- view to modifying the regulation, though there would be nothing introduced in the way of double payment on surplus.
Mr. Millar leaves Dunedin to-morrow for Wellington.
