That additions to (he Day's Bay wharf will lxi required in the liear future is indicaled by the Harbour Hoard .Engineer (.Mr. ./. .Murt-hbanks) in his annual report. Mr. Henry Vibart, the ghost in Mr. H. B. Irving's production of "Hamlet," relates a quaint incident which seems lo prove that Shakespeare, is uot so well known as is generally imagined. Three, of tho members of the company took n walk into the country out of Invcrcargill last week, and feeling ho' and dusty, rested at u wayside caravanserei "across tho border." There they fell in with some of the local residents, to whom they admitted being among tho Irving players. As they were chatting, the strains of a concertina broke clamant upon the ear. "D'ye hear that?" snid one of tho residents. "He's a clever chap, that—often goes into town to the shows, anil comes right back, and plays us all the 'toones.' 'K'l be at your show to-morrow, to pick up the 'toones. , " "But we're playing 'Hamlet,' and there are no tunes in it," explained Mr. Vibart. Quite a lot of people patronise the taxi-cabs in Wellington. Some pay and somo do not. Those who do not are mostly people who at the end of the rido inform tho driver that they have left their money in other clothes, and follow it up by giving a fictitious name, which the taxi-driver usually accepts, having no alternative. A case has been brought under our notice where a young man took quite a long rido in a nice smooth-run-ning taxi, and when the timn came for paying up, snid that ho had not bulucient money on him, but it would bo all right, he was so-and-so, brother of so-and-so. Having waited a day or two for his "fare" to turn up, the driver made inquiries of the "brother," who informed the driver that he only had one brother, who was living in a country very remote from Kow Zealand. Such cases make it hard for those who are genuinely short of money, and have not the slightest intention of practising such, acts of petty fraud.
