ST. PATRICK'S DAY.
LOCAL CELEBRATIONS. SPORTS AT NEWTOWN PARK/ A very largo crowd of people gathered at Newtown Park on Saturday to view tlio sports in oennection with tlio St. Patrick's Day celebrations. Throughout tlio dny tho ■weather romainod well-nigh perfect. Tho Very Eev. Dean Regnuult celebrated mass at St. Mary of tho Angels, Boulcott Street, at 9 a.m., and preached on the subject of tho festival. After tho service a procession was formed outside,tho church and proceeded by way of Manners Street and Courtenay Place "to Newtown Park. Tho ordeKof the procession was as follows:—Jupp's Brass Band; St. Patrick's Collego Cadets (in charge of their own officers), 100; St. Vincent Cadets; St. Anne's ' Cadets (with the St. Anne's Cadet Dram and Fifo Band); Marist Brothers' Cadets fTasman Street); Marist Brothers' Cadets (Hawkestone Street), 160; jaunting car (in which tho passengers included Mr. M. Bohan, Father of the Hibernian Society, in Wellington); Hibernian Society, 150; Catholic Club, 50. Tlio total number on parade was 500. , Children from the Catholic schools wero conveyed to Newtown Park in special tramcars, which left tho Town Hall at 10 o'clock. As soon as tho procession reached the Park the children's sports wero com- . menced, under the control of Eev. Bros. i Yirjrflhis and Martin, who had a strenuous time supervising some '100 competitors. Refreshments were provided on tho ground, and in the of ternoou sports for adults were held, tho crowd of spectators ereatly increasing by that time. Those present included the Prime Minister (Sir .Joseph Ward) and Lady Ward, Sir James Carroll, 'Archbishop Kedwpod. the Yen. Archdeacon Devoy, Very Kcv. Dean Rpgnnult, Very Rev. Father O'Shea, Vica.r-General, tho Very Rev. Dr. Kennedy, Rector of St. Patrick's College. • , _ Theisports were supervised by a special committee, including the Verv Rev. Father Hickson (chairman), Mr. W. M. Ellis (general secretary), and Messrs. H. M'Keowen. J. J. Callaghon, W. J. Feeney. P. D. Hoskins, C. Gamble, T. Leslio and W. H. -.Tones. Tho dancing was judged by Mr. D. M'Phoo. A feature of the. programme.was a display, of club and dumbbell exercises by pupils of the Sacred Heat .Convent, Hill Street. ' ' RESULTS. Macarthy's splendid banner for tho best squad in girls' drill went to tho Hill Street Convent Indian Club Squad, who performed excellentlyj in iact, Hill Street Convent scooped the pool as far as girls' events were concerned. Entries for tlio boys' events were numerous, while the finishes wero closo and oxciting. The most popular events in this class wero the half-milo race and the one-mile bicycle race. Sellars. 3. The half-milo race caused great excitement.'. Tho prize, a silver cup, to bo in the possession of the school of the winner, was donated by Messrs. Sullivan and Fitzgibbon. THE IKTSTI CONCEKT TO-NIGHT. Tlio Irish National Concert in honour of St. Patrick's Day will be held in the Town Hall to-night under the patronage of his Grac: , Archbishop Redwood, the Prime. Minister (Sir Joseph Ward't, Lady Ward, his Worship the Acthv.'-Mayor, and the clergy of Wellington. Mr. William M'Laiighlin, organist of St. Joseph's, will preside at tho grand organ from 7.30 to S p.m.. when he will play the" Irish selection—"Hibernia," "Nocturne No. 2" (Chopin) and selection "Genis of Ireland." The programme will include numerous songs all closoly associated with Ireland and Irish sentiment. Misg Teresa M'Enroe will sing the old soncr "Come Hack to Erin," Mr. J. Parker will contribute a*oernet f-~)o. Mr. P. ISnrry selections on Irish , pipes. Miss N. Sinrson a (lute polo, otid Mr. P. M'C'fiTthy will dnnci , the Irish ji;.-. T!n> final chorus "Gnd Save IHav!." will be suns by tlie pupils of thfi y.;<r<i. Brothers' School, and it is hnned that the audience will join in the siuging of the Irish Anthem.
