Tho question as to who shall Tμ th« next Mayor of Wellington is beginning to agitato tho minds of those, who take au interest in municipal affairs. As far ns possible nominees for the position are concerned, there has hitherto existed sumo complexity owing to the silence of tho absent .Mayor, Mr. T. M. Wili'onJ, who is recruiting his health on the other side of the world. As was pointed out in this column u low days ajjo, the exact intentions of Mr. Wilford appeared to bo exercising an influence on other possible candidates ior the Mayoral chair. Mr. Wilford stated that if his health permitted, ho would again be a candidate, and is understood to have left a signed nomination paper. 'J'he uncertainty as to Mr. WiTford'n position is now ended by a statement from his; attorney (Mr. 0. G. Rembor), who luis received a cablegram from the Mayor to tho efi'oct that, as he will not be back in New Zealand till June, he will not stand for election this term. The names of those gentlemen who ore likely to consider nomination have already been published, but not ouc of them would give a decided answer until the Mayor says yea or nay. To those already mentioned, the name of Mr. John Smith, the Acting-Mayor, should be added. Mr, Smith expresses his intention of contesting tho sent ff Mr. Wilford declined nomination.
