His Excellency Hie Governor, who returned lo Auckland by the Kotorua ex]>ross. last evening (states a Press Association telegram dated from Auckland, March 1C), will pay a visit to tho camp of the . Third Auckland Infantry Regiment at l'apatootoe next Tuesday, and the following Monday will journey up to Hamilton, where the Sixteenth Waikatos will be in camp to-day. Lord Islington took advantage of the favourable weather to go for a sail in the harbour in his yacht. On Tuesday evening next a dinner party will be given at Government House, and on Thursday next ■ their Excellencies will give a garden party, preparations for which are already in hand. Tho Governor hail purposed spending a few days in the Rakaia district for deer stalking, in tho early part of next month, I)lit owing to his numerous engagements, he has been compelled to abandon tho expedition. Jlr. William Hobbes will bo a candidate for the vacancy created on the Eastbourne Borough Council by (he resignation of Councillor Bannatyne. An election of four members of tho Victoria College Council caused by tho retirement of Sir Robert Stout and Messrs. 0. "Wilson, 3. 0. W. Aitlcen, and 0. Watson will bo held on April 8 (Easter Monday). Nominations close on March 2"). The four retiring members are eligible for re-election. Sub-Inspector Norwood, of Palmerston North, has been promoted to the rank of inspector, and on April 1 will take charge of tho Groymoulh district in succession to Inspector Black, who retires on superannuation. A farewell gathering was given by the Taila section of the Hutt parishioners to I.he Uev. AY. A. Cress, who has resigned to tako un a position as assistant curate in St. Peter's Parish, "Wellington, Mr. M. Welsh referred in eulogistic terms to the work bf Mr. Cross among them. He had won the esteem and affection of all. They sincerely regretted tho parting, but congratulated him upon his promotion, and wished him iiroswrity in his new snhere of work. Mr. Welsh, on behalf of tho parishioners, presented Mr. Cross with an envelope containing a number of sovereigns with which -to purchaso a snitiil>le present which would stand as a email loken of the respect and affection in which Ihe Taita parishioners held him. Mr. Cross thanked them for their kind expressions of goodwill. Tho kindhrartcdnoss which they had always shown him inade his work among (li-ern easy and pleasant.
