UNIVERSITY HOME SCIENCE.
NEW COURSE IN OTAGO. As a result of a Senate decision, the Otago University College has established a Chair of Homo Scienco. A course of lectures has been arranged by Professor Boys-Smith, and the lectures and practical work for the Degreo and Diploma courses will recommence on April 9. In connection with this now departure in university teaching, Mr. James Allen, JI.P., Chancellor of the University of Otago, received a letter, as follows, from the Inspector-General of Schools, under date September*G last: — "In reply to your letter, dated August SO, I havo to say that there appears to beevidence of an increasing desire on the part of teachers and others directly concerned with the education of grrls to oxtend the scope and improve the character of the instruction in domestic subjects now generally given in primary, secondary, and technical schools. "The chief obstacle so far to progress in the direction desired lias been the difficulty of obtaining locally teachers qualified to give instruction in homo science as distinguished from cooking, dressmaking, etc. In some cases teachers have been, or are being imported. There seems to 1« cond reason for believing that n knowledse of domestic science and homo economics will in tlio near future l>o regarded as a sine qua non in connection with appointments to positions on the staffs of manual training centres, district high schools, secondary schools, and technical Bchools."
