MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
(Before Mr. W. G. Biddtll, 8.M.). 'A GOOD TURN-STRANQE GRATITUDE. AngUß M'Donald pleaded guilty to stealing £6 10s. in money, and a magnifying glass -worth 2s. 6d., from Charles Waters. Chief Detective Brobcrg etated that Waters hud recently been a cook on- a steamer. Ho had met M'Donald, who had told him that ho was hard up nml. had been out of work some time and consequently was without food. Waters had bought him a meal and paid for a bed for him. They had gone to bed, and in the morning Waters found that his pockets had been rifled, and that M'Donald had gone. When M'Donald was arrested on Thursday ho had £i 35.-id. in his' possession. ■ ; M'Donald was fined £2, and he wei ordered to refund the £2 6s. Bd. which had not been recovered. SECOND-HAND DEALER FINED. Alfred Dodd was acoused of breaking the conditions of his license as a secondhand dealer by buying a quantity of lead nnd failing to enter the fact of the purchnse in a book 'of the prescribed form; and, also, of buying the lead from a boy who was apparently under 1G years of age. Chief Detective Broberg stated that the boy who sold the lead was only 11 years of age, and that no one could take him for a boy of more than IK years. His Worship said that apparently defendant did not understand hie obligations under the - Second-Hand Dealers Act; the best thing defendant could do was to get a copy of the Act and Tead it. Defendant was fined .£3 on the first charge, and £2 on, the second charge. LAND COMPANIES' RETURNS. For failing to send to the Registrar of Companies their annual lists of members, and summaries for 1911, the Ilorowhenua Park Company, Ltd., were fined 305.; the Lancaster Land Company, Ltd., 205., and the Ohakune Land Company, Ltd., 10s. Mr. T. S. Weston appeared for the Ohakune Land Company, Mr. D. S. Smith appeared for the Lancaster Land Company, Ltd. Mr. Neave represented the Crown. IMPEDING TRAFFIC. W. Ward was fined 10s. for impeding traffic at Berhampore. Mr. E. M. Becchey, who appeared for •• ho corporation, said that Ward had delayed a tram for about five minutes through his cart being across the line. Also, tho emergency brako of a car had to bo applied to prevent a collision. Defendant made a statement, in which he eaid that he had a young horse in the cart, and, at the time of the incident in question, the animal had been frightened by a motor-cycle. " A SIGNIFICANT SUGGESTION. ' Isidore Jacobue was fined £3 for breaking a prohibition order. r As this was Jacobus's third breach of tho order since December 16, he was warned to beware of "an extended holiday" —at Roto Roa. ALTOGETHER TOO TRIVIAL. Patrick Hannigan, a workshop foreman, was charged with assaulting Henry Grondin, an apprentice working under him. His Worship dismissed the information, remarking that it was altogether too trivial for the Court. OTHER CASES., For insobriety, Andrew Reid was fined 10s., and Alexander Churchman 20s. Arthur.Edwar 1 Tonks was fined .£2 for a breach of his prohibition order. For failing to keep as near as possible to the left side of Jervois Quay when he was driving a motor-car, Ernest Peacock was fined as. : His Worship dismissed a charge against a cabdrivor, Robert MTaggart, of. cruelly ilWreating a horso. Mr. A. L. Herdman ipfrj'arcd' for the defendant. •i\Hor leaving horses and vehicles unattended, James Coughlan, Cecil M'lntosh, and Harry Allan wero each fined ss. ■ Allan Maguire was fined £1 for a breach of the scaffolding regulations. •For failing- to register a dog, Charles Currie was nned ss.
