PROSPECTS IN CITY AND SUBURBS.

From inquiries made there Beems to bfl no prospect now presenting itself of anyone contesting the Moyorality of Wellington if Mr. T. M. Wilford elects to stand onco more. His candidature for another term of office depends 6olely on (ho state of his health, he informed the Town Clerk (Mr. J. R. Palmer) prior to his departure, and as a. reassuring message was received a few days ago, it is considarod probablo that Mr. Wilford will be nominated for another term. Other names which have been floating round in connection with tho Mayorality nro those of Messrs. J, G. W. Aitken, J. T. Luke, and John Smith, but none of those gentlemen caro to express themselves definitely on the point. Tho impression conveyed is that should Mr. Wilford stand down this year there is likely to bo several nominees ■ for the position of first citizen. Thero is no City Council election this year. As for the suburbs, Mr. Charles Cathie, the present Mayor of Karori, has definitely decided to stand onco more. The recent strong differences of opinion over tho . tramways question, mav prodnco an election, but though certain names aro mentioned as likely candidates none have come out into (he open vol. though the date of the election is duly six weeks ahead from to-day. Mr. John Bipdio, tho sitting Mavor, will once more seek the honours of'tho chair at Miramar. ]fc is not considered I'kely that he will have to contest an election. • In Onslow on election is not likely. Mr. Frank lloHlsworlh, the silling Mayor will contest Ihe Mayorality against nil-comers. There will in all probability he a contest nt the llutt between the present Mayor (Air. E. P.
