MIRAMAR AFFAIRS.

WATER AND DRAINAGE,

Satisfactory progress is being made with the drainago works at Miramair, designed by Mr.'Mestayer, which are being carried out under contract by Messrs. Sanders Brothers. Ono of the two ejectors for Miraniar flat has practically been completed in Prince's Street, and another is partly completed in YVorser Bav. The ejector in Prince's Street has been sunk to a depth of 20ft., and it was found that the bed of tho lake, that at ono time covered a good part of the flat, is sand. I ho ejector, a huge, round iron cylinder, was sunk in sections or rings, "and as one ring sunk to tho sand bottom, another was rivetted on above, and the sand below was excavate! from beneath until the iron fabric sunk under its own weight. At one time, tho cylinder was found to bo jambed tight by tho sand "packing" in tightly round tho outside. This trouble was got over by erecting a platform across the top of tho cylinder, and piling on weight until it was gradually forced down to the solid onco more. It is estimated that tho ejectors—four in all—will bo completed in about two months time, and that the system will be ready for operations in eight or nine months. The borough is now reticulated pretty completely for water, and about 100 places have already been connectod up with the system, which draws its supply from the city mains during tlio night hours, and stores it in a surface reservoir, capablo of holding 500,000 gallons. Applications for, connection are being received almost daily, and within a month or two tho majority of tho residences in the borough will bo independent of tank water. With regard to the tunnel from the Miramar North tram terminus to tho Karaka Bay Road, a report on which was presented by the Borough Engineer at the last meeting of the council, the Mavor (Mr. J. Brodio) states that the propo'sal is not likely to be submitted to the ratepayers. 2t was reported on at the request of a councillor, and whilo it would be a decided convenience for dwellers in Miraniar North the expense was too great for tho propisition to be considered at present.
