In (ho Union Assembly, Mr. Patrick Duncan moved tho adjournment to discuss tho prison treatment of tho men Whitaker and Morant, who were arrested in connection with tho Johannesburg tramway strike, and afterwards released, and who had secured damages against tho governor of tho Johannesburg Gaol because they had been treated as convicted prisoners. There was much comment owing to General Hertzog, Minister for. Justice, justU fying the Departmental action, on tho ground of the emergency of the situation, The Primo Minister, General Botha, treated the matter as a. mere attempt to make parly capital.
